Sonam Wangchuk’s Health Deteriorates as Jantar Mantar Protest Enters 5th Day
New Delhi, July 2026 : The protest led by the Delhi Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar entered its 5th day on Thursday, with growing concern over the health of activist Sonam Wangchuk, who continued his indefinite hunger strike for the fifth consecutive day. Organisers claimed that Wangchuk’s blood sugar level had dropped significantly, prompting fresh appeals to the government amid fears over his deteriorating condition.
According to a health update shared on social media by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, Wangchuk’s blood sugar had fallen to 60 mg/dL, while his blood pressure also remained low. Dipke alleged that Wangchuk’s condition was worsening and held the government responsible for any adverse consequences.
“Sonam Wangchuk’s health is continuously deteriorating. His blood sugar has dropped to 60 and his blood pressure remains low. If anything happens to him, the government will be responsible,” Dipke wrote in a post on X. He also reiterated the organisation’s demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Despite the health concerns, Wangchuk sought to reassure his supporters through a message posted on X, saying he was “still doing fine,” although he complained about excessive noise at the protest venue. In an unusual appeal, the environmentalist requested help in locating a pair of discontinued wired Bose QuietComfort 20 noise-cancelling earphones, explaining that he had misplaced his own during his travels.
Wangchuk said he was willing to pay a fair price for an unused pair and clarified that he specifically needed the wired version rather than Bluetooth earphones, as they better suited his requirements during the fast.
As the agitation continued, Dipke announced a new public outreach initiative titled “Chai Pe Charcha with Cockroach”, aimed at gathering suggestions from protesters and supporters on how to expand and strengthen the movement. According to him, the initiative is intended to encourage greater public participation and generate ideas to broaden the campaign.
The protest has also drawn participation from student organisations. Alongside Wangchuk’s fast, six students affiliated with the All India Students’ Association (AISA) continued their own indefinite hunger strike from a separate stage at the protest site.
AISA had earlier expressed concern over the health of its fasting members, stating that the blood sugar level of JNUSU Joint Secretary Danish had dropped to 61 mg/dL. The organisation also said that doctors had advised two other fasting students, Ameen and Deepak Kumar Verma, to discontinue their hunger strike because of health-related risks.
The demonstration also received support from veteran social activist Nikhil Dey, a founding member of the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan (MKSS), who joined the protesters at Jantar Mantar.
Meanwhile, controversy erupted after CJP accused the Delhi Police of taking action against a makeshift protest library established by AISA students for visitors and supporters. Dipke alleged that police personnel removed books from the site and physically assaulted students who had organised the library.
He further claimed that books on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Bhagat Singh were thrown aside during the operation. Demanding accountability, Dipke called for the immediate suspension of Assistant Commissioner of Police Ajay Sharma, alleging that he led the action.
In a post on X, Dipke accused the police of disrespecting the historical figures by discarding books dedicated to them and questioned the use of force against students. He demanded disciplinary action against the officers involved and maintained that the protest would continue despite the alleged police intervention.
The Delhi Police had not issued an official response to the allegations at the time of reporting. The demonstrations at Jantar Mantar continue as protesters press for their demands while concerns over the health of those on indefinite hunger strike intensify.
