Sion Hospital Expansion to Transform Healthcare Access in Mumbai: CM Fadnavis

Mumbai, March 2026 : Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the expansion of the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital will significantly enhance access to modern, high-quality healthcare services for citizens in Mumbai and across Maharashtra. The statement came during the groundbreaking ceremony for Phase II of the hospital’s redevelopment project in Sion.

Currently operating with around 1,900 beds, the hospital’s capacity will be expanded to 3,286 beds upon completion. The ambitious project, estimated at Rs 2,500 crore, is expected to be completed by 2030. It will include the construction of a main hospital building, a dedicated cancer care facility, an emergency services block, and an outpatient department (OPD), all equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Highlighting the government’s vision, Fadnavis said the initiative reflects a commitment to providing free and quality healthcare services to every citizen through coordinated efforts between the state government and the municipal corporation. He noted that the hospital, which began in 1947 with just 60 beds, has grown into one of the region’s most important healthcare institutions and will now enter a new phase of modernization.

The redevelopment plan includes a 15-storey main hospital building with a capacity of 2,200 beds, a 13-storey cancer care unit with 200 beds, a 14-storey emergency building with 600 beds, and a separate 14-storey OPD facility capable of handling around 16,000 patients daily. Additionally, over 40 operation theatres and advanced diagnostic services such as MRI, CT scans, and radiology units will be installed.

The project will also feature a 25-storey residential tower for doctors and nurses, modern laboratories, a pharmacy, catheterization labs, patient dining areas, and waiting lounges for relatives. Specialised facilities such as trauma care, skin banks for burn patients, and human milk banks will further strengthen the hospital’s capabilities.

Fadnavis emphasised that schemes like the Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana and Ayushman Bharat are already providing free treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh for nearly 2,400 diseases, with higher assistance for critical illnesses. He said such initiatives, combined with infrastructure expansion, will ensure accessible and affordable healthcare.

Mumbai Mayor Ritika Tawde described the project as the beginning of a new era in public healthcare, noting that it is not merely an infrastructure upgrade but a step towards building a comprehensive, integrated health system. She added that the municipal corporation continues to provide healthcare at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, treating millions of patients annually.

The redevelopment of Sion Hospital is expected to significantly improve both capacity and quality, reinforcing Mumbai’s position as a major healthcare hub while ensuring that advanced medical services remain accessible to all sections of society.
