Trump Warns of Strikes on Iran’s Energy Sites if Talks Fail, Signals Progress in Negotiations
Washington, March 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a stark warning that the United States could target Iran’s key energy infrastructure if ongoing negotiations fail and the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened, even as he indicated progress in diplomatic talks.
Speaking amid heightened tensions, Trump said Washington is engaged in “serious discussions” with what he described as a “new, and more reasonable, regime” in Iran to bring an end to current hostilities. He expressed optimism about the outcome, stating that “great progress has been made” and a deal could “probably” be reached soon.
However, he cautioned that failure to secure an agreement would trigger a strong response. Trump warned that if a deal is not reached quickly and maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked, the US could launch strikes targeting Iran’s electric generating plants, oil wells, and the strategic Kharg Island. He added that desalination facilities could also be considered as potential targets.
According to Trump, these sites have so far been deliberately spared, but any future action would be in retaliation for past attacks on American personnel. His remarks signal a sharp escalation in tone, directly linking military options to the outcome of negotiations and freedom of navigation in the critical waterway.
Separately, US Senator Marco Rubio also issued a warning to Iran against attempts to control or impose costs on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. He stressed that such actions would not be tolerated and reiterated the importance of keeping the route open for global trade.
Rubio, however, echoed a note of cautious optimism, suggesting that a diplomatic resolution could be achieved within weeks rather than months.
The developments come at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a crucial artery for global energy supplies and international commerce.
