Drugs Worth Over ₹13 Crore Destroyed in Khawzawl

Khawzawl, April 2026: Drugs worth more than ₹13 crore were destroyed at Krishi Vigyan Kendra Khawzawl on Thursday afternoon as part of a special disposal drive conducted by the Khawzawl District Drug Disposal Committee. The event covered narcotics seized between September 2025 and February 2026 and was attended by Deputy Commissioner K Vanlalthiana.

Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner described the large quantity of seized drugs as alarming, while appreciating the dedicated efforts of the police, particularly the Superintendent of Police and his team. He asserted that Khawzawl district would not tolerate drug trafficking and warned that strict legal action would be taken against offenders. He also urged individuals involved in drug abuse or trafficking to reform and abandon such activities.

He further called upon NGOs and organisations working against drug abuse to collaborate closely with the police in identifying and preventing drug-related activities in the district.

The destruction programme was led by SDPO Jeremia Vanlalhmachhuana. SP F Lalbiakzauva delivered the welcome address, while a report was presented by DSP Headquarters Jerry Lalrinsanga. Representatives from NGOs also addressed the gathering. Among those present were SDO (Sadar) Chandrakant Bagoria, members of the District Drug Disposal Committee, NCORD members, officials from the police and Excise departments, and invited guests.

The destroyed narcotics included 20.743 kg of methamphetamine valued at ₹11.99 crore, 582 grams of heroin (No. 4) worth ₹1.14 crore, and 1.868 kg of ganja. In connection with these seizures, nine cases were registered at Khawzawl Police Station, leading to the arrest of 17 individuals. The total value of drugs destroyed during the event was ₹13.13 crore.

In 2025, a total of 12 NDPS cases were registered at Khawzawl Police Station, resulting in seizures of methamphetamine, heroin, and ganja worth ₹2.36 crore, with 15 arrests made.

From January 2026 till date, five NDPS cases have been registered, with drugs worth ₹11.54 crore seized and 10 individuals arrested.

Authorities stated that sustained efforts are being made in Khawzawl district to combat drug trafficking, with coordinated action by the police, the Excise and Narcotics Department, and NCORD initiatives focusing on supply reduction, demand reduction, and harm minimisation.
