Suryakumar Yadav’s Fifty Powers Mumbai Indians to Competitive 162 Against Delhi Capitals
New Delhi, April 2026 : A composed half-century from Suryakumar Yadav guided the Mumbai Indians to a competitive total of 162/6 in 20 overs against the Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday.
On a slow black-soil pitch that offered little pace and grip for stroke-making, Mumbai’s innings never quite gathered full momentum. However, a steady partnership between Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma helped the visitors recover from early setbacks and post a fighting total.

The innings began with some early promise as Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma found boundaries in the opening overs. Rickelton played a couple of elegant flicks, while Rohit looked in good touch with crisp strokes through the off and leg sides. But Mukesh Kumar quickly turned the tide in Delhi’s favour with disciplined bowling.
After conceding runs early, Mukesh tightened his line and length, removing Rickelton with a mistimed shot to mid-off. He followed it up with the wicket of Tilak Varma, who fell to a cleverly disguised knuckleball, leaving Mumbai struggling at 31/2.

At this stage, Suryakumar walked in and began rebuilding the innings with calm authority. He rotated the strike effectively and punished loose deliveries, stitching together a crucial 53-run partnership with Rohit Sharma. The duo ensured stability while also keeping the scoreboard ticking.
After the powerplay, both batters opened up. Rohit launched a towering six, while Suryakumar displayed his trademark innovation with a well-timed boundary and a clean hit over the leg side. However, just as Mumbai looked set to accelerate, Delhi struck again. Rohit’s patient knock came to an end when Axar Patel deceived him with a slower delivery.
Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, including Sherfane Rutherford’s brief stay at the crease. Despite this, Suryakumar held firm, reaching his half-century in 35 balls. His innings of 51 off 36 deliveries, studded with three boundaries and two sixes, formed the backbone of Mumbai’s total.
He found useful support from Naman Dhir, and the pair briefly lifted the scoring rate, including a productive over against Kuldeep Yadav. However, Delhi fought back once again, with Lungi Ngidi dismissing Suryakumar with a clever pace-off delivery. Dhir also departed soon after, unable to convert his start into a bigger contribution.
In the closing overs, late cameos from Mitchell Santner and Corbin Bosch added valuable runs, helping Mumbai cross the 160-run mark. A total of 38 runs came in the final four overs, giving the innings a late push.
For Delhi, Mukesh Kumar stood out with figures of 2/26, while Axar Patel and others chipped in with timely breakthroughs to keep Mumbai in check.
With a competitive total on the board, the stage is now set for an intriguing second innings in what promises to be a closely fought contest.
