India Calls for Stability in West Asia Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran, April 2026: India has underlined the urgent need to restore stability and security in West Asia, expressing support for ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the escalating conflict in the region. The remarks came following a telephonic conversation between External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.

According to a statement issued by Iranian Foreign Ministry, the two leaders discussed recent developments in West Asia, where tensions have intensified due to ongoing military actions and heightened geopolitical friction. The conversation focused on the broader implications of the conflict and the need for coordinated international efforts to de-escalate the situation.

During the exchange, Araghchi raised serious concerns over what he described as “grave crimes” committed by U.S. and Israeli forces against Iran. He referred to alleged attacks on industrial and production infrastructure, as well as on nuclear facilities operating under international safeguards. The Iranian minister also pointed to continued rhetoric from U.S. officials threatening further strikes, particularly targeting Iran’s energy infrastructure.

Highlighting the gravity of the situation, Araghchi emphasised the responsibility of the global community, including the United Nations, to address violations of international law and prevent what he termed the “normalisation of war crimes.” He also reiterated Iran’s firm resolve to defend its national interests and security, warning that continued military actions could have far-reaching consequences for both regional and global stability.

India, while maintaining a balanced and cautious stance, stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region. Jaishankar conveyed New Delhi’s support for diplomatic and multilateral initiatives aimed at halting the conflict. He underscored that restoring calm in West Asia is critical not only for the countries directly involved but also for the broader international community.

Earlier in the day, Jaishankar confirmed the conversation in a brief post, stating that he had discussed the “present situation” with his Iranian counterpart. However, he did not disclose further details of the discussion.

The dialogue comes at a time when tensions are particularly high around the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime corridor through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply is transported. Disruptions in this region have already raised concerns over global energy security and economic stability.

With military activity increasing and rhetoric intensifying from multiple sides, fears of a broader conflict continue to grow. In this context, India’s emphasis on dialogue, stability, and international cooperation reflects its broader diplomatic approach to managing crises in strategically sensitive regions.

As the situation evolves, the role of global powers and international institutions will remain crucial in preventing further escalation and steering the region toward a peaceful resolution.
