Houthis Claim Joint Missile-Drone Strike on Eilat Amid Escalating Regional Tensions
Sanaa, April 2026 : Yemen’s Houthi rebels on Monday claimed responsibility for a coordinated attack on Israel’s southern city of Eilat, saying the operation was carried out in collaboration with Iran and Hezbollah. According to a statement issued by Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree, the strike targeted what the group referred to as “Umm al-Rashrash,” the name they use for Eilat.
In a post on X, Saree said the operation was jointly executed with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iranian military, and Hezbollah. He added that the assault involved a barrage of cruise missiles and drones aimed at “key and military targets of the Israeli enemy” in southern Israel.
The claim was also broadcast by the Houthi-affiliated channel Al-Masirah, which reported that several strategic locations were targeted during the attack. However, the Israeli military confirmed that drones had been launched toward Eilat from Yemen but stated that no damage had been reported as a result of the incident.
The development comes amid intensifying tensions across West Asia, with multiple actors involved in the ongoing conflict. Just days earlier, the Houthis had claimed another attack targeting Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport and other “important” military sites in southern Israel. According to reports cited by Al Jazeera, that operation involved a cluster missile and multiple drones directed at specific targets.
In parallel, Iran’s military also confirmed that it had conducted a large-scale drone operation targeting critical sites linked to the same Israeli airport, indicating a broader, coordinated escalation involving regional allies.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi issued a strong warning to the United States and Israel, cautioning them of serious consequences following a reported airstrike on Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology earlier on Monday.
In a post on X, Araghchi said the US-Israel coalition had attacked what he described as “Iran’s MIT,” referring to the country’s leading technical university. He warned that Iran would respond to the strike.
“The Israeli-American aggressors have bombed Iran’s MIT. This follows attacks on other universities. Fourteen hundred years ago, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that even if knowledge were located in the distant Pleiades constellation, Iranians would attain it. The aggressors will see our strength,” he said.
According to Iranian state media Press TV, the early morning airstrike targeted academic and civilian infrastructure at the university. The series of attacks and retaliatory warnings underline the rapidly worsening security situation in the region, raising concerns about a wider conflict involving multiple state and non-state actors.
