Women Receiving Strong Support Through Women and Child Development Department Schemes

Through various schemes of the Women and Child Development Department, needy and distressed women are receiving support in the form of shelter, financial assistance, and legal aid.

1) Swadhar Greh / Shakti Sadan for Women
Under this scheme, destitute, abandoned, widowed, separated, unmarried mothers, distressed and abused women in the age group of 16 to 60 years are provided shelter and rehabilitation. In Sangli district, this scheme is implemented by Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan, Sangli. Facilities such as accommodation, food, education, skill training, and vocational training are provided free of cost.
Women can apply directly to the institution’s superintendent or seek admission through the District Women and Child Development Office, police, social organizations, or social workers.

2) Sakhi Niwas – Working Women’s Hostel
Two hostels are being run in Sangli for working women—one by Bhagini Nivedita Pratishthan and another by Latthe Education Society. This scheme provides safe accommodation for single, unmarried, widowed, divorced, separated women, or women whose husbands live away.
Eligibility requires a monthly income not exceeding ₹50,000 in metropolitan cities and ₹35,000 in other cities. Women can stay with their children (girls up to 18 years and boys up to 12 years). Rent is charged at 15% of gross salary for single-bed rooms, 10% for double-bed rooms, and 7.5% for dormitories.

3) Counseling Centres
Under this scheme, counseling services are provided to women facing domestic violence disputes. Four centers are operational in Sangli district at police stations in Sangli city, Islampur, Vita, and Tasgaon.
In 2024–25, 574 women and in 2025–26, 267 women received counseling services. For more details, women can contact the respective police stations.

4) Abhay Centres
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act is implemented across all talukas. Abhay Centres operate in the offices of Child Development Project Officers within Panchayat Samiti premises.

5) One Stop Centre
The ‘Sakhi One Stop Centre’ provides medical, legal, and psychological support under one roof for distressed women facing physical, mental, or economic abuse. Women and their families can seek help by contacting the toll-free Women Helpline 181.

6) Internal Complaints Committee
To ensure safety at workplaces, every government and private establishment with 10 or more employees must form an Internal Complaints Committee under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013. Women facing workplace harassment can approach this committee.

7) Government and NGO Child Care Homes
Under the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015, children aged 0 to 18 years in need of care and protection—such as orphans, homeless, HIV-affected, abused, or children of prisoners—are admitted to child care homes. Facilities include food, clothing, shelter, medical care, education, training, and counseling.
In Sangli district, 11 child care homes (including 8 for girls) and one infant home are operational. Assistance is available through the toll-free helpline 1098.

8) Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Child Care Scheme
Under this scheme, children of single, widowed, abandoned, or destitute women receive a monthly assistance of ₹2,250.
