Washington, April 2026 : Donald Trump on Sunday announced a sweeping naval blockade of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of refusing to abandon its nuclear ambitions despite prolonged negotiations mediated in Pakistan.

In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump said the high-level talks, which lasted nearly 20 hours in Islamabad, were largely productive but ultimately failed to resolve key issues. “Most points were agreed to,” he noted, but stressed that Iran remained “unyielding” on what he described as the most critical concern — its nuclear programme. “IRAN IS UNWILLING TO GIVE UP ITS NUCLEAR AMBITIONS!” he declared.

The US President said he had been fully briefed following the talks by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and senior adviser Jared Kushner. He also acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating the dialogue, praising its leadership, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, calling them “extraordinary.”

However, Trump accused Iran of backtracking on assurances to maintain open navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. He claimed that Tehran had allegedly placed mines in the water, creating uncertainty and deterring commercial vessels. “What ship owner would want to take the chance?” he asked, describing the situation as causing widespread disruption to global trade.

Labeling the development as “world extortion,” Trump announced immediate military measures. “Effective immediately, the United States Navy will begin the process of blockading any and all ships trying to enter or leave the Strait of Hormuz,” he said, signalling a sharp escalation in tensions.

He further warned that US forces would intercept vessels suspected of paying tolls to Iran for safe passage, asserting that such actions were illegal. “No one who pays an illegal toll will have safe passage on the high seas,” he stated. Additionally, Trump said US naval units would begin clearing mines from the waterway to restore safe navigation.

Issuing a stern warning, the President said any hostile action by Iran would be met with overwhelming force. “Any Iranian who fires at us, or at peaceful vessels, will be blown to hell,” he said, underscoring Washington’s readiness to respond militarily if provoked.

Despite the aggressive stance, Trump indicated that a diplomatic resolution remained possible in the future. He expressed hope that normal maritime operations could eventually resume, but placed the responsibility squarely on Iran for the current impasse.

The escalation is closely tied to long-standing tensions over Iran’s nuclear programme. Reiterating a firm US position, Trump said, “Iran will never have a nuclear weapon.”

The Islamabad talks reportedly involved senior Iranian officials, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi, and Ali Bagheri. While Trump described the discussions as “friendly and respectful,” he acknowledged that fundamental disagreements remained unresolved.

With the blockade announcement, tensions in the region have sharply intensified, raising concerns about global energy supplies and the stability of one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors.
