Nation Bids Emotional Farewell to Asha Bhosle, Cremated with Full State Honours in Mumbai
Mumbai, April 2026 : India on Monday bid a tearful farewell to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, as she was cremated with full state honours at the historic Shivaji Park, marking the end of an extraordinary era in Indian music.
Fondly known as “Asha Tai,” the iconic singer passed away on April 12 at the age of 92 due to multi-organ failure following a cardiac arrest. She had been admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a day earlier after suffering from extreme exhaustion and a chest infection. Her demise has left a profound void in the cultural fabric of the nation.
In recognition of her unparalleled contribution to Indian music, the Maharashtra government accorded her a state funeral—an honour reserved for individuals of exceptional national significance. The farewell echoed the emotional send-off given to her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, at the same venue.
Her mortal remains were placed at her residence in Lower Parel from morning till afternoon, allowing thousands of fans, admirers, and members of the film and music fraternity to pay their last respects. Emotional crowds lined the streets as her funeral procession moved towards Dadar, reflecting the deep connection she shared with millions.
At around 5 p.m., amid a solemn atmosphere, the last rites were performed with a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour by the Maharashtra Police. The ceremony witnessed the presence of several prominent political leaders, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, along with ministers and other dignitaries.
Leaders across political lines and members of the entertainment industry gathered to pay tribute to the legendary singer. Bollywood personalities, including Aamir Khan, joined in mourning the loss of one of the most versatile voices in music history.
Paying homage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi described her passing as a monumental loss to the nation’s cultural heritage. Tributes also poured in from film icons such as Shah Rukh Khan, A. R. Rahman, and Hema Malini, who remembered her as an irreplaceable pillar of Indian cinema.
Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was visibly emotional as he attended the funeral along with his wife Anjali. Sharing a deeply personal bond with the singer, Tendulkar described her as a family figure and expressed heartfelt grief over her loss in a moving tribute.
During a state cabinet meeting held earlier in the day, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government would take steps to establish a music institute inspired by Asha Bhosle’s vision. He noted that the singer had previously proposed such an initiative and assured that efforts would be made to bring it to fruition.
Asha Bhosle’s illustrious career spanned over eight decades, during which she recorded more than 12,000 songs across genres. From soulful classics like “Dil Cheez Kya Hai” to energetic hits such as “Dum Maro Dum,” her versatility set her apart as a musical legend. Her achievements earned her numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and National Film Awards.
As the nation mourns her passing, one thing remains certain—Asha Bhosle’s timeless voice will continue to resonate across generations, ensuring that her legacy lives on forever.
