US Navy Orders 405 Patriot PAC-3 MSE Missiles To Arm Its Destroyers.
Washington DC; April 2026: The United States Presidential budget request published on April 03rd includes provisions to equip the U.S. Navy with 405 Patriot PAC-3 MSE enhanced interceptor missiles for use by its Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers. Within the context of the massive defense spending allocated for Fiscal Year (FY) 2027, the acquisition of munitions for the U.S. Armed Forces, and consequently for the U.S. Navy, has expanded dramatically.
Within this spectacular budget, typical of wartime, an additional billion-dollar budget has been allocated for the purchase of PAC-3 Missile Segment Enhancement (MSE) missiles by the US Navy and their integration into the MK-41 vertical launch system, used on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. These escort vessels, designated by the US Navy as Guided Missile Destroyers (DDGs), are the standard-bearers of this powerful naval force, currently boasting 76 in active service, including 5 based at the Spanish Naval Base in Rota (Cádiz).
The approved purchase of these state-of-the-art surface-to-air missiles from Raytheon, part of the North American multinational RTX Corporation, represents a considerable leap compared to FY 2026, when funds were allocated to acquire only 12 missiles, versus the 393 additional ones currently planned.
For the past three years, industry and the US Navy have been undertaking significant work to integrate the Patriot PAC-3 MSE aboard destroyers. The first test firing, from the MK-41 Vertical Launching Systems (VLS) cells that equip US Navy destroyers, is scheduled for May 2024. Thus far, the program has focused both on physical integration and ensuring that the PAC-3 can be integrated with the Aegis combat systems.
Lockheed Martin has indicated that the integration of the Patriot PAC-3 MSE with the MK-41 has been completed for some time, although to activate the capability, the final acquisition contract with the U.S. Department of Defense must be awarded. This milestone would occur once the presidential budget requested by the Trump administration is approved, although it could also be rejected by Congress, which would necessitate modifications to the budget allocations for Fiscal Year 2027.
In addition to the 405 PAC-3 MSEs destined for the US Navy, the presidency has indicated its willingness to meet the high demand of the US Army, which requires a total of 2,798 Patriot missiles, primarily to replenish its stockpiles, some of which have been used in the current Iran-Contra conflict. This would bring the total Patriot interceptor purchase for FY 2027 to more than 3,200 missiles, valued at nearly $14 billion (€12.131 billion), representing a 13-fold increase compared to the investment in FY 2026, when 245 MSEs were acquired by the US Army and Navy.
The evolution of the PAC-3 MSE acquisition program led RTX Corporation to announce in February 2026 that it would increase its leading annual production to more than 2,000 missiles. This increase in funding and industrial capacity has been driven by the critical importance of these interceptor missiles in recent conflicts, where hundreds of units have been used in the protracted war in Ukraine. However, demand has skyrocketed due to their use against the numerous missiles and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) launched by Iran, a significant portion of which are intercepted by US Army Patriot batteries deployed in the Middle East, as well as those of Washington’s allies in the region. This effectiveness comes at a cost and has consumed a large volume of these highly effective smart missiles, making their replacement essential.
PAC-3 MSE Missile –
PAC-3 missiles defend against incoming threats – including tactical ballistic missiles, cruise missiles
and aircraft – through direct body-to-body contact delivering exponentially more kinetic energy on the
target than can be achieved with blast-fragmentation kill mechanisms. Building on the combat-proven PAC-3 Cost Reduction Initiative (CRI), the PAC-3 MSE expands the lethal battlespace with a two-pulse solid rocket motor, providing increased performance in altitude and range.
