Yusuf Pathan Questions Surge in Agency Activity Ahead of Bengal Polls
Shibpur, April 2026 : Amid intensifying election activity in West Bengal, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and former Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan has raised concerns over the sudden increase in the activity of central agencies in the run-up to the Assembly elections.
Speaking in Shibpur, Pathan questioned why such agencies appear more active only during election periods rather than maintaining a consistent presence throughout the year. He remarked that while heightened vigilance before polls is common, it would be more effective and credible if agencies functioned with the same intensity year-round. “What is the benefit of being active only two to three months before elections?” he asked, indirectly pointing to concerns over the timing and intent of such actions.
His remarks come at a time when political tensions are running high in the state, with parties accusing each other of misusing institutions to gain electoral advantage. Without naming specific organisations, Pathan’s comments hinted at broader concerns regarding the role of central agencies in shaping the election environment.
The TMC leader also expressed confidence in the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that her government has consistently worked to protect the rights and safety of genuine voters. He reassured the electorate that there is no need for fear among legitimate voters, emphasising that their participation in the democratic process will remain safeguarded.
The issue of increased agency activity has added to the ongoing political war of words between the ruling All India Trinamool Congress and opposition parties, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Such debates are not uncommon during election cycles, often becoming a focal point of campaign narratives.
Political observers note that questions surrounding institutional neutrality frequently surface during elections, and statements like these may also serve as strategic messaging aimed at influencing public perception.
With the election atmosphere in West Bengal growing increasingly charged, such exchanges are expected to intensify further in the days leading up to polling.
