Case Filed Against Vijay Over Alleged Election Code Violation in Chennai Roadshow
Chennai, April 2026 : A case has been registered against actor-politician Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), for allegedly violating election norms by conducting an unauthorised roadshow in the T Nagar area of Chennai, police said on Thursday.
According to officials, the action followed a complaint filed by an Election Flying Squad officer, who alleged that Vijay carried out a roadshow despite having permission for a different type of campaign event. Authorities said the deviation from the approved format constitutes a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), which is currently in force ahead of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections scheduled for April 23.
Police confirmed that three separate cases have been registered in connection with the incident. The cases were lodged at West Mambalam, Nungambakkam, and Vepery police stations against Vijay, along with several TVK candidates and district-level party leaders who had originally sought permission for the campaign.
Officials stated that permissions granted for election campaigning are strictly regulated and specify the nature and format of the event. Any change—such as converting a permitted gathering into a large-scale roadshow—requires prior approval from election authorities. The alleged failure to comply with these conditions led to swift action by the flying squad, which is responsible for monitoring adherence to election guidelines.
The development comes at a critical juncture as political campaigning intensifies across the state in the run-up to polling. Enforcement of the MCC has been strict, with authorities maintaining close surveillance on campaign activities to prevent violations such as unauthorised rallies, misuse of public spaces, and departures from approved formats.
So far, there has been no official response from Vijay or the TVK regarding the cases. However, party sources indicated that the matter is under review, and a response may be issued after examining the details of the complaint.
It remains unclear whether the party will challenge the charges or offer an explanation regarding the nature of the event. Meanwhile, election authorities have reiterated that all political parties and candidates must strictly adhere to campaign regulations, warning that any violations will invite legal action.
The cases against Vijay highlight the heightened vigilance of enforcement agencies as Tamil Nadu heads into a closely watched electoral contest.
