Nitin Nabin Takes Oath in Rajya Sabha as New Members Sworn In; House Pays Tribute to Asha Bhosle and Mohsina Kidwai
New Delhi, April 2026 : BJP National President Nitin Nabin on Thursday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking his debut in Parliament’s Upper House. Elected from Bihar, this is his first term as a Member of Parliament, reflecting his growing prominence within the party and national politics.
Soon after the House assembled, several newly elected members from different states were administered the oath. From Bihar, BJP’s Shivesh Kumar and JD(U) leader Ramnath Thakur also took oath alongside Nabin.
From Assam, BJP leaders Terash Gowalla and Jogen Mohan, along with UPPL’s Pramod Boro, were sworn in. Haryana saw BJP’s Sanjay Bhatia and Congress leader Karamvir Singh Boddh take the oath.
From Telangana, Congress leaders Vem Narendra Reddy and Abhishek Manu Singhvi were sworn in, while Anurag Sharma took oath representing Himachal Pradesh. Maharashtra was represented by BJP’s Vinod Tawde, Odisha by Sujit Kumar, and Chhattisgarh by BJP’s Lakshmi Verma and Congress leader Phulodevi Netam.
The proceedings later turned solemn as the House paid tributes to legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, who passed away on April 12 at the age of 92. Rajya Sabha Chairman C. P. Radhakrishnan informed members about her unparalleled contribution to Indian music, noting that she had lent her voice to thousands of songs over a remarkable career spanning more than eight decades. He also highlighted the numerous honours she received, including the Padma Bhushan, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and several National Film Awards.
Members also paid homage to veteran politician and former Union Minister Mohsina Kidwai, who passed away on April 8 at the age of 94. Born in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda district, she had a distinguished public life spanning nearly six decades. Kidwai served in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Legislative Council, and both Houses of Parliament, and also held ministerial positions at the state and central levels.
Her contributions towards the upliftment of weaker sections and her role as an able administrator were widely acknowledged. The House described the demise of both Asha Bhosle and Mohsina Kidwai as an irreparable loss to the nation.
Members observed a moment of silence in memory of the departed, marking a poignant pause in an otherwise eventful day in the Rajya Sabha.
