South Africa Women Beat India by Six Wickets to Take 1-0 Lead in T20I Series
Durban, April 2026 : South Africa Women delivered a dominant all-round performance to defeat India Women by six wickets in the opening T20I, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. A composed run chase, led by Laura Wolvaardt, combined with disciplined bowling at the death, helped the hosts secure a convincing win.
After being put in to bat, India Women began aggressively, with Shafali Verma providing early momentum through a brisk 34 off 20 balls. Smriti Mandhana contributed 13 as India raced to 46 within the first five overs. However, South Africa struck back with timely wickets, halting the early charge and shifting the momentum.
The innings was rebuilt by captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues, who stitched together a crucial 71-run partnership for the third wicket. Rodrigues played fluently for her 36 off 29 deliveries, while Harmanpreet anchored the innings with a well-crafted 47 off 33 balls. At 119/2 in the 14th over, India appeared poised for a total in excess of 165.
However, South Africa’s bowlers mounted an impressive comeback in the closing stages. Ayabonga Khaka and Tumi Sekhukhune executed their plans to perfection, using variations in pace and accurate slower deliveries to trigger a collapse. India managed only 38 runs in the final 34 balls while losing wickets at regular intervals, eventually finishing at 157/7. Khaka stood out with excellent figures of 3/16.
Chasing 158, South Africa approached the target with composure. Despite losing an early wicket, Wolvaardt took charge of the innings with a classy and controlled knock, bringing up a well-paced half-century. She found able support in Annerie Dercksen, who played a steady innings to keep the scoreboard moving during the middle overs.
India’s bowling effort lacked discipline, with extras and inconsistent lines easing the pressure on the hosts. While Shreyanka Patil and Shree Charani managed to pick up wickets, the visitors failed to apply sustained pressure. Missed opportunities in the field further compounded India’s difficulties.
Wolvaardt’s dismissal for 51 in the 14th over briefly offered India a glimmer of hope. However, Dercksen, who scored a valuable 44 off 34 balls, along with Chloe Tryon, ensured there were no late setbacks. The pair guided South Africa closer to the target before Tryon sealed the victory in emphatic fashion, smashing a six on the first ball of the final over.
South Africa reached 158/4 in 19.1 overs, completing the chase with five balls to spare and showcasing their superiority across departments. While India showed promise through their middle-order partnership, their inability to accelerate at the death and lack of bowling discipline proved costly.
India Women will now look to regroup and address these shortcomings ahead of the second T20I, as they aim to level the series.
Brief Scores: India Women 157/7 (20 overs) lost to South Africa Women 158/4 (19.1 overs) by six wickets.
