UK Ministers Rally Behind Starmer Amid Mandelson Controversy
London, April 2026 : Senior members of the British government have come out in support of Prime Minister Keir Starmer as he faces mounting political pressure over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as the UK’s ambassador to the United States.
The controversy centres on revelations that Mandelson, a long-time associate of convicted offender Jeffrey Epstein, had allegedly failed to pass mandatory security vetting before being appointed to the high-profile diplomatic post in late 2024. Starmer is expected to address Parliament on Monday to clarify the circumstances surrounding the decision.
Responding to the backlash, Starmer said on Friday that neither he nor other ministers had been informed about the failed security clearance, calling the lapse “unforgivable.” He has since placed the responsibility on senior officials within the Foreign Office, arguing that the appointment was processed despite objections from security agencies.
In a decisive move, the Prime Minister dismissed Olly Robins, the top civil servant at the Foreign Office, on Thursday. However, the decision has drawn criticism from former bureaucrats, who accuse Downing Street of using Robins as a scapegoat to deflect political accountability.
Opposition leaders have intensified their attacks, with some calling for Starmer’s resignation. Critics have accused him of poor judgement and failing to maintain transparency with the public over the appointment.
Despite the growing criticism, key ministers have defended the Prime Minister. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall stated that Starmer would not have approved Mandelson’s appointment had he been aware of the failed vetting process. She described him as “an honest man” who acknowledged the mistake and has taken corrective action.
Similarly, Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who was serving as Foreign Secretary at the time of the appointment, expressed shock over the situation. He said it was “inexplicable” that the Foreign Office had not informed Downing Street about the security concerns.
Starmer’s leadership has already been under strain due to declining public approval and criticism over several policy decisions. The Mandelson episode has further intensified scrutiny of his decision-making, particularly given Mandelson’s widely known association with Epstein.
Mandelson was eventually dismissed from his diplomatic role in September 2025 after fresh details emerged regarding his links to Epstein, who died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.
Meanwhile, UK authorities are investigating allegations of misconduct in public office related to Mandelson’s earlier tenure as a Labour minister more than 15 years ago. He was arrested in February and later released. Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing and has not been formally charged.
As the controversy unfolds, Starmer faces a crucial test in Parliament, with both his leadership and credibility under intense scrutiny.
