Commencing her visit with a meeting with the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense, Serhii Bolev who thanked Spain for its support, Spain’s Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles assured Ukraine with the shipment of equipment, alongwith the training of military personnel within the framework of the EUMAM mission, followed by a tribute dedicated to those who have been called to glory at the Wall of Remembrance, in Mykhailivska Square in Kiev.

“Ukraine is now part of Spain”, with these words the Minister of Defense emphasised the support Spain has been offering since the very beginning of the war. “An unjust war”, the Minister stated, “which reflects the cruelty of these four years, during which we have never stopped standing by the Ukrainians”. Robles expressed her appreciation to the members of the Border Guard. During their meeting, the Ukrainians discussed the evolution of the war over this period, which currently involves the development of unmanned aerial systems capabilities, both for interception and reconnaissance. So far this year alone, the Border Guard has intercepted 4,000 drones, compared to approximately 1,300 in 2025.

However, despite the increase in these capabilities, Ukraine still needs material support. During his visit, Robles announced the delivery of a significant number of armored tactical vehicles. The first shipments will arrive in early May and will be complemented by 155mm ammunition.

“This collaboration demonstrates our country’s commitment in defending democratic values, freedom, and a just and lasting peace”, said Robles, who traveled with the Secretary General for Defense Policy, Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez.

This April, Spain will surpass the figure of imparting training to 9,000 Ukrainian military personnel on its soil, within the framework of the European Union Military Assistance Mission. The humanitarian dimension of Spanish support is also noteworthy, with the accommodation of Ukrainian combatant families in military residences, thus complementing the strictly military aid.

Back in Spain, critics have taken a jibe at Margarita Robles for supplying the BMRs (Blindado Medio de Ruedas) which is a 6×6 amphibious armoured personnel carrier primarily used by the Spanish Army, manufactured by Santa Bárbara. Modernised to the BMR M1 standard with Scania engines and added armour, it acts as a troop transporter and combat vehicle, with variants including ambulances and mortar carriers, alongside the Vehículo de Exploración de Caballería (VEC-M1), a 6×6 armoured cavalry scout vehicle used by the Spanish Army. According to the latest statistics – these ones lose their brakes and have caused Spain many crashes.
