US Tightens Naval Blockade on Iran as Trump Cites Leadership Rift, Cancels Talks

Washington, April 2026: The United States has intensified enforcement of its naval blockade on Iran, with the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) confirming that American forces are actively implementing sanctions and restricting maritime movement to and from Iranian ports.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said that 37 vessels have been redirected since the blockade began. It highlighted a merchant vessel named Sevan, which was intercepted in the Arabian Sea earlier on Saturday and is now complying with U.S. directives to return to Iran under military escort. The development underscores Washington’s firm approach to restricting Iran’s maritime trade routes.

The blockade was initiated following an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump on April 12, directing the U.S. Navy to prevent ships from entering or leaving the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz. The decision came after the first round of U.S.-Iran talks held in Islamabad on April 11–12 failed to yield a breakthrough.

Iran has strongly opposed the move. President Masoud Pezeshkian warned that any threat to the security of the Strait of Hormuz could have far-reaching consequences for global trade, given the waterway’s significance as a key oil transit route.

Tensions escalated further as Iran’s military command, the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, reiterated its readiness to respond if what it described as U.S. “blockade, banditry and piracy” continues in the West Asia region.

Adding to the diplomatic strain, President Trump announced on Saturday that he had cancelled a planned visit by U.S. representatives to Islamabad for further talks with Iranian officials. In a brief post on Truth Social, Trump maintained a confident tone, stating, “We have all the cards, they have none! If they want to talk, all they have to do is call.”

He also cited internal divisions within Iran’s leadership as a key reason for halting the diplomatic effort, referring to “tremendous infighting and confusion” among Iranian authorities.

These divisions were highlighted recently when Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, considered a moderate, stated that the Strait of Hormuz remained open, only to have the hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) contradict him by reasserting tighter control shortly after.

Despite extending a ceasefire indefinitely, the United States has chosen to maintain the naval blockade, signaling a dual-track strategy of military pressure and conditional diplomacy. With negotiations stalled and both sides adopting firm positions, the situation remains volatile, raising concerns about broader disruptions to regional stability and global trade.
