Lucknow Post 228 as Mumbai Face Steep Chase in High-Scoring IPL Clash

Delhi, May 2026 : In a run-filled encounter, the Lucknow Super Giants put up a formidable total of 228/5 in 20 overs against the Mumbai Indians, setting up a challenging target of 229 runs on a batting-friendly surface.

Opting to bat first, Lucknow made an explosive start. Openers Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis took charge early, attacking the Mumbai bowlers with intent. While Inglis departed after a brief cameo, Marsh continued to anchor the innings. The momentum truly surged when Nicholas Pooran walked in at number three and unleashed a stunning assault. The West Indian powerhouse smashed a blistering half-century off just 16 balls, propelling Lucknow to 123/1 by the eighth over and putting them firmly in control.

At one stage, a total well beyond 250 looked inevitable. However, Mumbai staged a crucial comeback through Corbin Bosch, who turned the tide with a game-changing over. He dismissed both Pooran and Marsh in quick succession, breaking the backbone of Lucknow’s innings and triggering a middle-order collapse. The batting side suddenly found themselves slipping to 160/5, losing momentum at a critical juncture.

Despite the setback, Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh steadied the innings with a composed partnership. They rotated strike effectively and capitalised on loose deliveries, particularly against the spinners, ensuring Lucknow finished strongly.

Mumbai’s experienced bowlers Jasprit Bumrah and Deepak Chahar delivered a disciplined performance at the death. The duo conceded just 22 runs in the final three overs, preventing Lucknow from reaching an even more daunting total.

With 229 runs required for victory, Mumbai Indians now face an uphill task. However, given the flat pitch and quick outfield, the stage is set for a thrilling chase in what promises to be a high-scoring contest.
