Neymar Takes Break as Santos Awaits Decision on Playing Future
Rio de Janeiro, July 2026 : Brazilian football icon Neymar has been granted time away from football by Santos as he reflects on the next chapter of his career following Brazil’s disappointing exit from the FIFA World Cup, according to Brazilian media reports on Wednesday.
The 34-year-old forward, whose contract with his boyhood club Santos runs for another six months, is reportedly taking a short vacation before deciding whether to continue playing professionally. Speculation over his future has intensified after he announced his retirement from international football following Brazil’s shock Round of 16 elimination.
According to local reports, Santos officials are prepared to begin discussions with Neymar and his representatives once he returns from his break. The club is said to be “waiting for a signal” from the veteran star before opening talks over a possible extension or determining his future plans.
Neymar is currently in the United States with his family and is expected to remain away from football for at least 10 days. The period has been described as an opportunity for the Brazilian great to assess whether he wishes to continue his club career after bringing an end to his long and illustrious international journey.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward bid farewell to the Brazilian national team after Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Norway at New York New Jersey Stadium, a result that marked Brazil’s earliest FIFA World Cup exit since 1990.
Following the loss, an emotional Neymar reflected on the end of his international career.
“I tried, I tried. Now it’s over. I started here, and I finished here,” he said, recalling that the same venue had hosted his Brazil debut in 2010.
Further fuelling speculation about retirement, Neymar’s father appealed to his son through a heartfelt message on social media, urging him not to walk away from football altogether.
“I want to make a request as a father. Ney, keep playing football. Feel the joy of having the ball at your feet again. Smile on the field again,” Neymar Sr. wrote on Instagram.
Since returning to Santos in January 2025, Neymar has made 43 appearances across all competitions, contributing both goals and experience to the club where his professional career began.
Despite recurring injury problems and nearly three years away from international football, Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti included Neymar in his World Cup squad earlier this year. Although used only as a substitute in two matches, the veteran forward managed to score a late penalty against Norway.
Santos will now await Neymar’s decision, with his choice expected to determine whether one of football’s most celebrated careers continues at club level or comes to an end.
