Assam Government Formation Likely After May 11, Says Himanta Biswa Sarma
May 2026 : Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday indicated that the formation and swearing-in of the new BJP-led government in Assam will take place after May 11, following the completion of necessary constitutional and organisational procedures.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati after submitting his resignation, Sarma said the process had been initiated in accordance with democratic norms after the Election Commission of India formally notified the Assembly election results.
“The Election Commission has officially declared the results and communicated them to the Governor. Immediately after that, I submitted my resignation as Chief Minister and recommended the dissolution of the present Assam Legislative Assembly,” Sarma said.
He added that Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya accepted both the resignation and the recommendation for dissolution, while asking the outgoing ministry to continue in a caretaker capacity until the new government is sworn in.
“We will continue as a caretaker government during this transition period till the new ministry assumes office,” Sarma stated.
While refraining from confirming an exact date, the Chief Minister suggested that the swearing-in ceremony is unlikely to take place before May 11. “There are discussions about May 12, but I cannot officially confirm it. However, the formation of the new government will certainly happen after May 11,” he said.
Sarma also outlined the next steps in the process. A meeting of the BJP Legislature Party will be held soon in the presence of senior party leaders, including J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, who have been appointed as central observers.
During the meeting, the BJP Legislature Party will elect its leader. This choice will then be endorsed at a meeting of the National Democratic Alliance before formally staking a claim to form the government.
“The Governor will invite the elected leader to form the ministry. Only after these constitutional steps are completed will decisions regarding the composition of the new Cabinet be taken,” Sarma explained.
He added that the date for the Legislature Party meeting will be announced soon by the party’s central leadership.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has returned to power in Assam with a strong mandate, comfortably crossing the majority mark in the 126-member Assembly, paving the way for a new term under its leadership.
