Arunachal Pradesh Proposes Tawang Centric Mega Buddhist Tourism Circuit Across North East.

Itanagar; May 2026: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has proposed the development of an integrated Buddhist tourism circuit connecting major spiritual and cultural destinations across the Northeast. Proposed circuit aims to connect Buddhist sites across Arunachal, Assam, Sikkim & Manipur for seamless pilgrim experiences.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the regional workshop on “Development of the Buddhist Circuit in Northeast India” in Tawang yesterday (06th May 2026, Wednesday), DyCM Chowna Mein stressed the need for a “professional and collaborative” approach involving neighbouring northeastern states as well as Buddhist-majority countries sharing deep cultural and spiritual ties with the region. Mein said the proposed tourism network should connect key Buddhist sites in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim and Manipur to create a seamless spiritual and cultural experience for domestic and international visitors.

He also suggested branding the collaborative initiative as the “Tawang Initiative” to give it a distinct international identity. Highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s significance in the Buddhist world, Mein said the state possesses an unparalleled blend of ancient monasteries, sacred landscapes and living Buddhist traditions.

“Arunachal Pradesh holds a unique place in the Buddhist world. From the ancient monasteries of Tawang, the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama, to the sacred landscapes of Bomdila, Dirang, Mechuka and Tuting, and the thriving Theravada tradition in Namsai, the state reflects the diversity and depth of Buddhist culture”, he shared on microblogging website.

The Deputy Chief Minister noted that the proposed circuit would not only boost tourism and economic opportunities but also help preserve the region’s spiritual and cultural legacy for future generations. “We are committed to developing a comprehensive Buddhist circuit that connects these spiritual centres with major destinations across the Northeast, mainland India and neighbouring countries. This effort will promote tourism while preserving our rich cultural and spiritual heritage”, Mein said.

The workshop brought together delegates from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and several Indian states to deliberate on strengthening regional cooperation through cultural tourism and heritage preservation. Underscoring Tawang’s importance as a major spiritual centre, he said the district is home to the 400 years old Tawang Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in the world outside Tibet. He also pointed out that Tawang is associated with the route taken by the present Dalai Lama during his entry into India in 1959, adding to its historical and spiritual significance.

Mein further highlighted heritage locations such as Dirang Dzong, Thembang heritage village, the sacred Pemako region and the scenic Mechuka valley as important anchors for a broader Buddhist and cultural tourism network in the Northeast. Apart from spiritual tourism, the Deputy Chief Minister spoke about Arunachal Pradesh’s wider tourism potential, citing the coexistence of 26 major tribes with distinct traditions, languages, attire and customs.

He also announced plans to host an international tourism event in Arunachal Pradesh later this year and invited global stakeholders to collaborate in transforming the state into a premier spiritual and cultural tourism destination. “Let us work together to shape this vision into reality and take forward the initiative of developing a world-class Buddhist and cultural tourism circuit”, Mein added.
