Vijay Likely to Retain Home and Police Portfolios as Tamil Nadu Prepares for New Government
Chennai, May 2026 : C. Joseph Vijay, who is set to take oath as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on Sunday, is expected to retain key portfolios such as Home, Police and Public Administration in the new government, according to sources in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK).
The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled to take place at 10 a.m. on Sunday at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium after Governor-in-charge Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar formally invited Vijay to form the government following his successful claim of majority support in the 234-member Assembly.
Party sources said around nine ministers are likely to take oath along with Vijay during the first phase of Cabinet formation.
A tentative list of ministers and possible portfolios has also emerged ahead of the ceremony.
Senior leader K. A. Sengottaiyan is expected to be entrusted with the Public Works Department (PWD), while N. Anand may be assigned the Municipal Administration portfolio.
C. T. R. Nirmal Kumar is likely to take charge of the Electricity Department in the new administration.
TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna is expected to become the Minister for Sports Development, while Raj Mohan may handle the Adi Dravidar Welfare Department.
Sources further indicated that V. N. S. Mustafa is likely to oversee Minority Welfare in the Cabinet.
In addition, P. Venkataramanan is expected to be given the School Education portfolio, while Arun Raj may handle Commercial Taxes and Registration.
The Congress, which extended support to the Vijay-led alliance after the Assembly election results, is also likely to receive representation in the ministry. Sources said Congress leaders Rajesh Kumar and Viswanathan are expected to be inducted into the Cabinet.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections but initially fell short of the majority mark needed to form the government independently.
However, Vijay subsequently secured support from the Congress, the Communist Party of India (CPI), the Communist Party of India (Marxist) CPI(M), the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), taking the alliance tally to 120 MLAs — comfortably above the majority mark of 118 in the Assembly.
Political observers believe Vijay’s decision to retain the Home, Police and Public Administration portfolios signals his intention to exercise direct control over governance and law-and-order matters during the crucial early phase of his administration as he transitions from cinema star to full-time political leader.
