Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected BJP Legislature Party Leader, Set for Second Term as Assam CM

Guwahati, May 2026 : Himanta Biswa Sarma was on Sunday unanimously elected as the leader of the BJP Legislature Party in Assam, clearing the way for him to take oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term.

The announcement was made by Union Minister and former BJP national president J. P. Nadda after a meeting of newly elected BJP legislators held in Guwahati. The meeting took place in the presence of central observers appointed by the party leadership.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had appointed Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini as central observers to oversee the election of the BJP Legislature Party leader in Assam.

Following the meeting, Nadda formally declared Sarma’s name and said that all legislators had unanimously expressed confidence in his leadership.

The BJP’s alliance partners, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), also extended their support to Sarma continuing as Chief Minister for another term.

Senior leaders of both regional parties attended the meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to the NDA alliance in Assam. They expressed confidence that the coalition government under Sarma’s leadership would continue to focus on the development and stability of the state.

Sarma first became the Chief Minister of Assam in 2021 after the BJP retained power in the Assembly elections. Over the years, he has emerged as one of the BJP’s most influential leaders in the Northeast and has played a major role in expanding the party’s political presence across the region.

Before joining the BJP in 2015, Sarma was a senior leader in the Indian National Congress and served as a minister in the Congress government headed by former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi.

After switching to the BJP, Sarma became instrumental in strengthening the party’s organisation in Assam and other northeastern states. He also played a key role in building and maintaining alliances with regional political parties, helping the BJP consolidate its influence in the region.

Sarma is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on May 12 along with members of his new Council of Ministers.

In the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, the BJP secured a strong mandate. The party alone won 82 seats in the 126-member Assembly, comfortably retaining power in the state as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Political observers view Sarma’s unanimous election as legislature party leader as a reflection of his growing influence within the BJP and the party’s continued dominance in Assam politics.
