Assam Assembly Elections Exhibits A Stark Security Forfeiture Of 455 Candidates.

Guwahati; May 2026: A total of 455 candidates of the total 722 who contested the Assam Assembly elections 2026 have forfeited their security deposit. Of them, 04 are from BJP, 18 from AAP, 10 each from Congress and AGP, 16 from AIUDF, 07 from UPPL, 248 are independents and 102 are from registered unrecognised parties. The list includes 418 male and 37 female candidates. The election results were marked by huge winning margins, both in case of NDA as well as Opposition candidates, indicating extreme polarization. The security deposit for a Legislative Assembly election is Rs 5,000 for a general category candidate and Rs 2,500 for those belonging to the ST and SC categories.

A defeated candidate who fails to secure more than one-sixth of the valid votes polled in the constituency loses his security deposit as per section 158(4) of The Representation of the People Act, 1951. There were 722 contestants in the contest, which represents an average of 06/seat. 02 constituencies had as many as 15 candidates, while 09 constituencies saw a straight fight between two candidates. Candidates from five national parties, four State parties, five parties from other States and 14 registered unrecognised parties were in the political contest this time.

According to a statistical report published by the Election Commission, female turnout in this election was much higher than that of males. Male turnout was 1,06,97,888 compared to female turnout of 1,08,37,040, and 113 from the third gender. The State had registered a record turnout of 86.33% in this election (including postal ballots). In the previous election, when the polling percentage was 82.04%, male turnout was 97,00,486 and female 94,76,334.
