Serving Humanity is Govt’s Top Priority; No One in Need Should be Deprived of Help: CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi, May 2026 : Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Monday launched a special ‘Seva & Rescue Campaign’ for destitute, sick and helpless people from the ‘Mukhyamantri Seva Sadan’. The Chief Minister flagged off a fleet of specially equipped ambulances and rescue vehicles as part of the five-day intensive drive, which will run from May 11 to May 15 across all 13 districts of Delhi. Through the campaign, the government aims to provide immediate assistance to more than 300 vulnerable people living in difficult conditions across the city.
The initiative is being jointly carried out by the Delhi Government’s Department of Social Welfare, Apna Ghar Ashram and Seva Bharti. Shakur Basti MLA Shri Karnail Singh, Apna Ghar Ashram founder Dr B.M. Bhardwaj, Seva Bharti Delhi Prant president Shri Ramesh Agrawal, senior government officials and representatives of social organisations were present at the launch event.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the specially deployed ambulances and rescue vehicles would reach out to homeless, sick and abandoned people living on roadsides, pavements and public spaces across Delhi and shift them to safe shelter facilities. Those rescued will be taken to Apna Ghar Ashram, where arrangements have been made for their treatment, care, food, medical support and rehabilitation. She said that if the families of rescued individuals are identified and willing to take them back, efforts will be made to reunite them with their loved ones after recovery. For those with no family support, the Ashram will continue to provide care with dignity, compassion and humanity.
Praising the work of Apna Ghar Ashram, the Chief Minister said the organisation has been serving humanity in the truest sense by giving thousands of elderly people, women and destitute citizens a new lease of life and respectful care. She noted that many people suffering from serious illnesses, physical hardships and neglect are forced to live on the streets without timely access to treatment, food or shelter. Extending help to such people, she said, is a shared responsibility of both the government and society. She added that the Delhi Government, in coordination with the police administration, the Social Welfare Department and social organisations, is working to ensure that no needy person is deprived of assistance.
Under the campaign, rescue teams are identifying and helping homeless, abandoned, sick and differently-abled men and women living on roads, railway stations, bus stands, religious places and other public areas across all 13 districts of Delhi. Priority is being given to those suffering from serious illnesses such as tuberculosis, cancer and AIDS by providing them safe shelter, treatment and proper care.
The campaign is being carried out with 19 special rescue ambulances, 10 support vehicles, nearly 100 staff members and 50 dedicated volunteers working round the clock. Those rescued will be accommodated at Apna Ghar Ashram, where they will receive medical treatment, nutritious food and dignified care. Arrangements have been made to accommodate up to 500 destitute persons, including 100 beds for women and 400 for men.
After recovery, people whose families are traced will be reunited with them through counselling and support services. Those with no family support will continue to be cared for by the Ashram. To ensure smooth and effective implementation of the campaign, a dedicated 24×7 ‘one-window system’ has also been developed in coordination with the Social Welfare Department. In the first phase of the drive, around 20 people have already been successfully rescued.
