Bandi Sanjay’s Son Moves Telangana High Court Seeking Interim Bail in POCSO Case
Hyderabad, May 2026 : Bandi Bhagirath, son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar, has approached the Telangana High Court seeking interim bail in connection with a POCSO case registered against him over the alleged sexual assault of a minor girl.
As the Telangana High Court is currently functioning under its summer vacation schedule, the petition has been filed before the Vacation Bench. The matter is scheduled to come up for hearing on May 14.
The case against Bhagirath, 25, was registered on May 8 at the Pet Basheerabad Police Station under the Cyberabad Commissionerate following a complaint filed by the mother of a 17-year-old girl. Police booked the case under provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, including Section 11 read with Section 12, along with Sections 74 and 75 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to police sources, the complaint alleged sexual misconduct and harassment involving the minor girl. The registration of the case triggered political and legal attention due to Bhagirath’s family background and his father’s prominent political position in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Before the POCSO case was filed, Bhagirath had lodged a separate complaint at the Karimnagar II Town Police Station against the girl and her parents. In his complaint, he alleged that they attempted to honey-trap him and demanded Rs 5 crore to avoid filing a police complaint against him.
Based on his allegations, police registered a counter-case against the girl and her parents under multiple sections of the BNS related to extortion, criminal intimidation, criminal conspiracy and common intention.
Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar has strongly denied all allegations against his son and claimed that political opponents were trying to malign his family’s image through fabricated accusations. He alleged that the case was politically motivated and intended to target him ahead of upcoming political developments in the state.
Meanwhile, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed Director General of Police C.V. Anand to immediately initiate a detailed probe into the matter. The Chief Minister reportedly questioned the delay in police action despite the complaint being lodged on May 8 and instructed authorities to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation.
Following the Chief Minister’s directive, Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty instructed Deputy Commissioner of Police Ritiraj to personally supervise the investigation. The DCP visited the Pet Basheerabad Police Station and reviewed the progress of the probe with the Assistant Commissioner of Police and Station House Officer concerned.
Addressing media persons, DCP Ritiraj said the police had already recorded the victim’s statement and collected key documentation related to the case. She stated that investigators were working on gathering additional information and preparing the next course of action.
“We have drafted a plan of action and will proceed accordingly,” the officer said, adding that the investigation was progressing on multiple fronts.
The police officer also indicated that Bhagirath was currently not traceable and suggested that efforts were underway to locate him. “If we find the accused, we will definitely arrest him,” she said.
Police are also analysing Bhagirath’s Call Detail Records (CDR) and other digital evidence as part of the investigation. Officials said all aspects of the case, including the allegations and counter-allegations, are being examined carefully.
The case has triggered considerable political debate in Telangana, with opposition parties demanding transparency and swift action, while BJP leaders have accused the ruling Congress government of attempting to politicise the issue.
