Trump Says Russia-Ukraine Settlement ‘Very Close’, Signals Hope for End to War
Washington, May 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed optimism about the possibility of ending the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict, saying that negotiations were moving in a positive direction and that a settlement between the two countries was “getting very close.”
Speaking to reporters before departing aboard Marine One for his visit to China, Trump suggested that diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the war were progressing, although he did not disclose details of any specific negotiations or agreements currently under discussion.
“The end of the war in Ukraine, I really think it’s getting very close,” Trump said while responding to questions related to his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Later during the media interaction, the US President again projected confidence about the prospects of peace between Russia and Ukraine.
“That war is getting closer. Believe it or not, it’s getting closer,” Trump remarked. “We think we’re going to end up getting a settlement between Russia and Ukraine.”
Trump also dismissed reports suggesting that there had been any understanding or agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding Moscow retaining complete control over the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine.
“No. No,” Trump said firmly when asked whether Russia should be allowed to control the entire Donbas region as part of any potential peace arrangement.
The President maintained that his administration was willing to do “whatever’s necessary” to help bring the conflict to an end and reduce global instability caused by the war.
Trump made the remarks while outlining broader foreign policy priorities ahead of his high-profile China visit, where global conflicts, trade issues and geopolitical tensions are expected to feature prominently in discussions with Xi Jinping.
According to Trump, reducing geopolitical tensions across different regions would also produce major economic benefits for the global economy, particularly in relation to oil prices, inflation and financial markets.
“As soon as this war is over, you’re going to see oil prices drop,” Trump said earlier during the interaction while discussing broader international conflicts and market conditions.
The Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for more than four years, has caused widespread destruction in Ukraine and significantly disrupted global energy supplies, food markets and international security systems.
International diplomatic efforts involving the United States, European nations and other major powers have continued in recent months amid attempts to encourage both Moscow and Kyiv to move towards negotiations.
The ongoing conflict has also had wider geopolitical implications for countries such as India, which has faced pressure from Western nations over its continued purchase of discounted Russian crude oil following the outbreak of the war.
At the same time, India has expanded strategic cooperation with the United States and European countries while maintaining its longstanding diplomatic and defence relationship with Russia.
