Metro Monday, No Vehicle Day and Fuel Conservation Drive to Reach Every Household: CM Rekha Gupta
Delhiites Will Be Inspired Through Continuous Efforts of MLAs, Says CM Rekha Gupta
New Delhi, May 2026 : Following Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s call for energy conservation, resource saving and a responsible lifestyle, Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta on Friday held an important meeting of BJP legislators at the Delhi Secretariat and urged them to take the Delhi government’s decisions and initiatives to every household across the Capital. The Chief Minister said that given the present global crisis, rising fuel-related challenges and prevailing economic conditions, the Delhi government was working with full commitment to turn the Prime Minister’s message into a mass movement.
CM Rekha Gupta asked MLAs to launch extensive public outreach campaigns in their respective constituencies and encourage people to save fuel, use public transport, adopt carpooling and follow a responsible lifestyle. She said legislators should themselves set an example for the public to follow. Under the ‘Metro Monday’ initiative, MLAs have been asked to travel by Metro once a week so that ordinary citizens are also encouraged to use public transport. The Chief Minister also appealed to legislators to limit their convoys, reduce the use of vehicles and prioritise electric vehicles.
She directed MLAs to visit RWAs, social organisations, market associations, educational institutions and other groups in their constituencies to spread awareness about the Delhi government’s ‘Mera Bharat, Mera Yogdan’ campaign. Calling it a 90-day public awareness drive, the Chief Minister said the campaign was not merely a government programme, but a collective effort in national interest in which every citizen had an important role to play.
The Chief Minister said the Delhi government had taken several major decisions to implement the Prime Minister’s appeal on the ground. As part of these measures, a two-day work-from-home system is being introduced in government departments, except essential services. Private institutions and companies have also been advised to cooperate in this effort. CM Rekha Gupta said people should also be informed about the decisions taken by the government during this challenging period so that they too could adopt them in their daily lives.
Under these decisions, every Monday will be observed as ‘Metro Monday’, while citizens have also been urged to observe one ‘No Vehicle Day’ every week. The government has also decided not to purchase any new petrol, diesel, CNG or hybrid vehicles for the next six months. In addition, the temperature of air conditioners in government offices has been fixed between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius to ensure electricity savings. The government has also decided to set up special ‘Made in India’ corners in malls and supermarkets across the Capital to promote indigenous products.
The Chief Minister said the present time was not just about government efforts, but about fulfilling national responsibility through public participation. According to her, the Prime Minister Modi Ji’s message was not limited to fuel conservation alone, but represented a broader national campaign for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat, environmental protection and responsible citizenship. CM Rekha Gupta said if every citizen brought small changes in daily habits, the country could face challenges such as an energy crisis with greater strength. She added that the Delhi government’s objective was not merely to take administrative decisions, but also to build awareness and encourage participation across society. According to the Chief Minister, if Delhi emerged as a successful model for the campaign, it would send a positive message to the entire country.
