PM Modi Arrives in Netherlands to Deepen Strategic, Economic and Technology Partnership

Amsterdam/The Hague, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Netherlands on Friday evening as part of his ongoing multi-nation diplomatic tour aimed at expanding India’s strategic, economic and technological engagement with key European partners.

The Prime Minister landed in Amsterdam before travelling to The Hague, where he is scheduled to hold a series of high-level meetings with Dutch leadership and interact with members of the Indian diaspora.

Announcing the Prime Minister’s arrival, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media that the visit would provide an important opportunity to strengthen the multifaceted India–Netherlands partnership and engage with one of the largest Indian communities in mainland Europe.

Soon after arriving, PM Modi highlighted the growing importance of India’s economic and strategic ties with Europe, particularly following progress in trade relations between India and the European Union.

In a message posted on social media, the Prime Minister said the visit comes at a significant moment when the free trade agreement process between India and the European Union has provided fresh momentum to trade and investment relations.

He noted that discussions during the visit would focus on expanding cooperation in several future-oriented sectors, including semiconductors, clean energy, water management and advanced technology.

PM Modi also confirmed that he would hold talks with Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and meet King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima during his stay.

Officials accompanying the Prime Minister said bilateral discussions are expected to cover a broad range of sectors such as trade, investment, defence cooperation, agriculture, maritime collaboration, digital innovation, climate action and resilient supply chains.

Particular emphasis is likely to be placed on cooperation in semiconductors and clean technologies, areas where both countries are seeking stronger partnerships amid global supply chain shifts and increasing focus on technological resilience.

Water management is also expected to remain a major area of collaboration, given the Netherlands’ globally recognised expertise in flood control, sustainable urban planning and water conservation technologies. Indian officials believe Dutch experience can significantly support India’s infrastructure and climate adaptation initiatives.

The visit comes at a time when India is deepening strategic engagement with European nations amid evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics. The Netherlands has emerged as one of India’s most important economic partners in Europe, with bilateral trade and investment witnessing steady growth over recent years.

Officials noted that the Dutch port city of Rotterdam continues to serve as a major gateway for Indian exports entering the European market, further strengthening commercial ties between the two countries.

PM Modi is also expected to address and interact with the Indian diaspora community during his visit. The Indian community in the Netherlands, one of the largest on mainland Europe, welcomed the Prime Minister’s arrival with enthusiasm.

Members of the diaspora expressed pride over India’s growing global influence and said the visit reflects the strengthening relationship between India and the Netherlands.

One member of the community said they were excited to witness the Prime Minister’s visit and were proud to see the strong presence of Indians in the Netherlands. Another community member highlighted the robust economic relationship between the two nations, pointing out that bilateral trade has crossed 28 billion euros and that the Netherlands remains among the top foreign investors in India.

Analysts believe the visit could further accelerate cooperation in emerging sectors such as green hydrogen, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing.

The Netherlands visit forms part of PM Modi’s broader diplomatic outreach to Europe and other strategic partners, with New Delhi increasingly focusing on expanding economic partnerships, attracting investments and strengthening supply chain resilience in critical sectors.

Officials said the talks in The Hague are expected to reinforce the India–Netherlands partnership as both countries seek deeper collaboration in innovation, sustainability and strategic technology cooperation.
