School Reopening Preparations Top Priority as CM Vijay Holds Key Education Review Meetings
Chennai, May 2026 : Preparations for the reopening of schools after the summer vacation have emerged as one of the immediate priorities of the newly formed Tamil Nadu government, with Chief Minister Vijay holding a series of important consultations with School Education Minister Rajmohan and senior officials at the Secretariat in Chennai.
The review meetings come at a crucial time for the School Education Department, with schools across the state expected to reopen shortly and the Class 10 public examination results scheduled to be announced in the coming days. The Chief Minister reviewed the department’s preparedness and discussed measures to ensure the smooth functioning of schools as students return to classrooms after the vacation period.
Officials also deliberated on various initiatives and administrative programmes planned for the education sector in the months ahead. The discussions formed part of a broader round of departmental reviews initiated by the new government following the allocation of ministerial portfolios.
The Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government assumed office after securing a decisive mandate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Actor-turned-politician Vijay took oath as Chief Minister along with nine ministers, marking the beginning of a new political phase in the state.
As part of the administration’s first major internal assessment, Chief Minister Vijay convened meetings with all nine Cabinet ministers and outlined the government’s priorities, expectations and approach to governance. According to sources, Vijay stressed the importance of efficient administration, timely policy implementation and responsive governance across departments.
During the interactions, the Chief Minister is also understood to have emphasised the need for departments to function in a coordinated and people-centric manner. The discussions reportedly focused on ensuring that welfare programmes and public services reach citizens without delay as the new administration begins its work across multiple sectors.
Following the Chief Minister’s meeting, individual ministers conducted separate review sessions with senior bureaucrats and officials attached to their respective departments. These meetings were aimed at assessing ongoing projects, identifying urgent administrative requirements and establishing immediate action plans.
Among all departments, the School Education Department received particular attention because of the approaching academic calendar and the large-scale logistical arrangements required for reopening schools across the state.
School Education Minister Rajmohan later chaired a detailed review meeting with senior departmental officials, including the School Education Secretary and the Director of School Education. Discussions reportedly covered infrastructure readiness, textbook distribution, transportation arrangements, teacher deployment, student welfare measures and other administrative preparations linked to the new academic year.
Officials are also believed to have discussed steps to strengthen learning outcomes, improve school attendance and continue existing welfare schemes aimed at supporting government school students.
The release of Class 10 board examination results was another key issue reviewed during the discussions. The government is keen to ensure smooth coordination and timely dissemination of results while also preparing for the admission process for higher secondary education.
Political observers view these early consultations as a sign that the Vijay administration is attempting to establish its administrative structure quickly and project an image of active governance from the outset.
The emphasis on school reopening preparations is also being interpreted as an effort by the new government to prioritise education and public service delivery during its initial phase in office.
With ministers now beginning detailed departmental reviews, the Tamil Nadu government is expected to gradually roll out its policy direction and administrative agenda in the coming weeks as the new administration settles into office.
Team Maverick.
