PM Modi Arrives in Norway for India-Nordic Summit, Receives Warm Welcome from Norwegian PM
Oslo, May 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Norway on Monday on the fourth leg of his five-nation diplomatic tour, receiving a special welcome from Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store at the airport in Oslo.

The personal reception accorded by the Norwegian Prime Minister underscored the importance attached to the visit, which marks a significant milestone in India-Norway relations. Norway’s Ambassador to India, May-Elin Stener, India’s Ambassador to Norway, Gloria Gangte, and several senior officials were also present to receive the Indian Prime Minister upon his arrival.
PM Modi reached Norway after concluding his visit to Sweden and will remain in the Nordic nation for a two-day official visit. During his stay, he is scheduled to participate in the third India-Nordic Summit and hold a series of bilateral engagements aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
The visit is historically significant as it marks Prime Minister Modi’s first official trip to Norway and also the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the country in 43 years.
As part of the visit, PM Modi is expected to call on King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. He will also hold detailed bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store on a range of issues covering trade, investment, clean energy, maritime cooperation and emerging technologies.
In addition to official talks, PM Modi will jointly address the India-Norway Business and Research Summit alongside his Norwegian counterpart. The summit is expected to focus on expanding business partnerships, innovation, research collaboration and sustainable development initiatives between the two countries.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), in a statement issued ahead of the visit, said the trip would provide an important opportunity to review the progress achieved in bilateral relations and identify new areas for deeper cooperation.
According to the MEA, discussions are expected to focus particularly on trade and investment opportunities under the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement. The talks are also likely to emphasise cooperation in clean and green technologies, renewable energy and the blue economy sector.
The ministry highlighted the growing economic engagement between the two nations, noting that bilateral trade between India and Norway stood at approximately USD 2.73 billion in 2024. It also pointed out that Norway’s Government Pension Fund Global has invested nearly USD 28 billion in the Indian capital market, reflecting increasing economic confidence and cooperation.
India and Norway established diplomatic relations in February 1947, shortly before India attained independence. Norway was among the first countries to formally recognise India, laying the foundation for a long-standing and friendly partnership.
Over the decades, relations between the two nations have steadily expanded across sectors including maritime affairs, renewable energy, fisheries, education, research and climate cooperation.
The MEA stated that India and Norway share common values such as democracy, diversity, rule of law, human rights and gender equality. Bilateral ties have also been strengthened through regular high-level political exchanges, parliamentary interactions and ministerial engagements over the years.
