Raghav Chadha Moves Delhi High Court Against Alleged Misuse of Identity Through AI and Deepfake Content
New Delhi, May 2026 : Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha has approached the Delhi High Court seeking protection of his personality and publicity rights against the alleged unauthorised use of his name, image, likeness, and identity on online and digital platforms.
According to the cause list published on the Delhi High Court’s official website, the matter is scheduled to be heard on Thursday before a single-judge Bench headed by Justice Subramonium Prasad.
In his plea, Chadha has sought legal protection against the alleged circulation and misuse of AI-generated, morphed, and deepfake content using his identity without consent. The petition reportedly names several defendants, including unidentified individuals listed as “John Doe” parties, accusing them of unauthorised commercial exploitation and misuse of his public persona across digital platforms.
The petition also seeks directions for the removal of deepfake videos, AI-generated material, manipulated images, and other fabricated content allegedly being circulated online using his likeness. Chadha’s legal move comes amid rising concerns over the increasing misuse of artificial intelligence tools to create fake videos, misleading endorsements, and manipulated digital content involving public figures.
The case adds to a growing number of personality rights disputes being heard by the Delhi High Court in recent months, particularly involving AI-generated impersonation and misuse of celebrity identities.
Several prominent personalities from politics, sports, entertainment, and spiritual organisations have either secured or sought legal protection against unauthorised use of their identities and likenesses online. These include former cricketer and current cricket coach Gautam Gambhir, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar, spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, actors Arjun Kapoor, Allu Arjun, Nagarjuna, Kajol, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, singer Jubin Nautiyal, filmmaker Karan Johar, podcaster Raj Shamani, and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.
Earlier this month, Shashi Tharoor also moved the Delhi High Court seeking removal of alleged deepfake videos that falsely portrayed him praising Pakistan. In his plea, Tharoor argued that the fabricated content posed a serious threat to his reputation and could potentially impact India’s international image.
Legal experts note that the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology is creating new challenges for privacy, reputation management, and digital rights enforcement. Courts are increasingly being approached to define the scope of personality and publicity rights in the digital era.
The Delhi High Court is expected to hear Chadha’s plea on Thursday.
