Viral Kannur Railway Station Image Symbolises CPI-M’s Crisis After Kerala Poll Defeat

Thiruvananthapuram, May 2026: A striking image from Kannur railway station has become the latest symbol of the dramatic political decline of former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the deep crisis confronting the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) following its crushing defeat in the recent Assembly elections.

The photograph, widely circulated across social media platforms, shows Vijayan quietly waiting for a train at Kannur railway station alongside senior CPI-M leader K.K. Ragesh, accompanied by only a small security presence. The image has triggered intense political discussion across Kerala, with many interpreting it as a reflection of how rapidly political fortunes can change.

For years, Vijayan was viewed as one of the most powerful political figures in Kerala. During his tenure as Chief Minister, he frequently travelled with long convoys consisting of over 20 vehicles and heavy security arrangements, a style that often drew criticism from opposition parties and sections of the public.

The contrast between that image of authority and the current scene at the railway station has resonated strongly with the public and political observers alike.

The viral photograph comes at a time when the CPI-M is facing growing internal unrest after the Left Democratic Front’s unexpected electoral collapse. District committee meetings currently underway across the state have reportedly witnessed sharp criticism against Vijayan as well as CPI-M state secretary M.V. Govindan.

According to party insiders, resentment has been building within sections of the leadership over what some leaders privately describe as Vijayan’s increasingly authoritarian style of functioning, alleged arrogance in decision-making, and the dismissive tone often adopted towards political opponents and critics.

One of the strongest reactions reportedly emerged during a CPI-M district committee meeting in Kozhikode, where some members are said to have termed the decision to appoint Vijayan as the Leader of Opposition a “historic blunder.”

The electoral setback has come as a major shock to the CPI-M leadership, particularly because Vijayan had entered the Assembly polls with the ambition of securing a historic third consecutive term in office.

Instead, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) returned to power decisively, leaving the Left camp facing one of its most severe political setbacks in decades.

The defeat also carries national implications for the CPI-M. For the first time in nearly 59 years, there is no CPI-M-led government currently in power anywhere in India, marking a significant turning point for a party that once held substantial influence in national politics.

Against this backdrop, the CPI-M Central Committee is scheduled to meet over the weekend to review the reasons behind the electoral debacle and discuss a roadmap for political recovery.

Yet, despite the organisational introspection underway, it is the Kannur railway station image that continues to dominate public discourse — a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of democratic politics and how swiftly political authority can fade after an electoral verdict.
