Delhi Government’s New Environmental Initiative to Provide Pollution Alerts Up to 72 Hours in Advance

New Delhi, May 2026 : An important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between the Delhi Government’s Environment Department and the AIRAWAT Research Foundation of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur in the presence of Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta. The agreement aims to address the challenge of air pollution in an effective and scientific manner. The MoU will remain in force for the next five years. Through this partnership, air quality management in the national capital will be further strengthened through the use of artificial intelligence (AI), advanced data analytics, hyperlocal monitoring, and scientific decision-support systems. Cabinet Minister Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa and officials of the concerned departments were also present on the occasion.

Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta said that the partnership would play an important role in ensuring more accurate identification of pollution sources, monitoring of pollution hotspots, improved forecasting systems, and timely interventions. She said that under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, technology-driven governance and innovation are being promoted across the country. In the same spirit, the Delhi Government is working to modernise air quality management by adopting a scientific approach. She said that better identification of local pollution sources, real-time monitoring, and forecast-based strategies would pave the way for lasting improvements in the capital’s air quality.

Speaking on the occasion, Delhi Environment Minister Sardar Manjinder Singh Sirsa said that Delhi requires technology-based, transparent, and result-oriented solutions to effectively address the long-term challenge of air pollution. He said the MoU is an important initiative towards developing a smart, scientific, and accountable environmental governance framework in the capital. He added that under the leadership of the Chief Minister, the Delhi Government is committed to giving the highest priority to public health and environmental protection and to making use of the latest scientific and technological tools available for pollution control.

AI-Based Air Quality Monitoring System to Be Developed

Under the agreement, an integrated air quality monitoring network based on low-cost sensors, mobile monitoring laboratories, and satellite data will be developed in Delhi. This will enable real-time monitoring of pollution and accurate analysis of local pollution sources. As part of the project, an AI-based advanced Decision Support System (DSS) will be developed. The system will be capable of identifying pollution hotspots, carrying out hyperlocal analysis, generating predictive analytics, and providing air quality forecasts 48 to 72 hours in advance.
