Iran Ready to Assure World It Is Not Seeking Nuclear Weapons: President Pezeshkian

Tehran, May 2026 : Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday said that Iran is prepared to formally assure the international community that it is not pursuing nuclear weapons and does not seek to fuel instability in the Middle East, according to remarks carried by state media.

“We are ready to assure the world that we are not seeking nuclear weapons. Iran is not seeking unrest in the region. It is the Zionist regime that is using every opportunity to keep war and unrest alive,” Pezeshkian said, as reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

His comments come amid renewed diplomatic signalling involving Tehran and Washington, alongside broader regional tensions and ongoing indirect negotiations on security and maritime issues.

The Iranian President stressed that the government’s primary focus remains domestic stability and improving economic conditions for citizens. He said that despite external pressures and internal challenges, state institutions are working continuously to address public needs and strengthen essential services.

Reiterating Iran’s position on nuclear activity, Pezeshkian said, “We announced during the time of our martyred Imam, and we announce now that we are ready to assure the world that we are not seeking nuclear weapons, we are not seeking unrest in the region.” He added that, in Iran’s view, regional instability is being driven by Israel’s policies, which he accused of pursuing long-term conflict strategies in the region.

He further underlined that Iran would not compromise on national dignity in any diplomatic engagement. “We and the negotiators will not compromise the country’s honour and pride in any way,” he said, referring to ongoing diplomatic channels and indirect discussions with global powers.

Addressing the Iranian public, Pezeshkian thanked citizens for their patience and cooperation during difficult economic conditions. He also urged greater efficiency in the consumption of energy and fuel, framing conservation as a national responsibility during a period of economic strain.

In a separate meeting with officials of the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) in Tehran, the President stated that all major national decisions remain under the authority of the Supreme National Security Council and are taken in coordination with the Supreme Leader, ensuring institutional oversight in sensitive policy matters.

Meanwhile, international attention on Iran diplomacy continued to grow. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking in New Delhi during a joint press conference with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, said that “significant progress” has been made in recent US-Iran diplomatic engagements. He also suggested that developments related to the Strait of Hormuz could be announced in the coming hours, though he cautioned that discussions were not yet concluded.

Rubio also reiterated the US position that Iran must never acquire nuclear weapons, reinforcing Washington’s long-standing policy while acknowledging that diplomatic efforts are ongoing.
