AIADMK Faces Fresh Setback as MLA Esakki Subbaiah Resigns from Assembly

Chennai, May 2026 : The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) faced another major political setback on Tuesday after its Ambasamudram MLA Esakki Subbaiah resigned from the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, becoming the fourth party legislator to step down following the recent Assembly elections.

Subbaiah’s resignation has further intensified speculation about widening cracks within the opposition party, especially as he is reportedly likely to join the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), adding momentum to ongoing political realignments in the state.

The MLA met Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar in person to submit his resignation letter. However, sources said the Speaker initially refused to accept the typed resignation and instructed Subbaiah to submit it in his own handwriting. Following this direction, the MLA wrote and submitted a handwritten resignation, which was then formally accepted.

His departure has added to the growing instability within AIADMK, which has been struggling with internal divisions since the Assembly elections. The party is now visibly split into two major factions — one loyal to General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) and another aligned with senior leader C. Ve. Shanmugam.

The divide became more pronounced during the Assembly trust vote, when the Shanmugam-led faction extended support to the TVK government, triggering strong backlash from the EPS camp and deepening internal discord.

Subbaiah’s resignation comes just a day after three other AIADMK MLAs submitted their resignations to the Speaker and subsequently joined TVK in the presence of senior party leader Aadhav Arjuna. The MLAs who resigned earlier include Sathyabama from Dharapuram (Reserved) constituency in Tiruppur district, Jayakumar from Perundurai in Erode district, and Maragatham Kumaravel from Madurantakam in Chengalpattu district.

With Subbaiah now joining the list, the AIADMK is facing increased uncertainty, with political observers suggesting that more defections cannot be ruled out in the coming days.

Esakki Subbaiah is considered a seasoned political figure in Tamil Nadu politics. He secured victory from the Ambasamudram constituency in the recent Assembly elections with a margin of 10,245 votes. He had earlier represented the same constituency in the 2011 and 2021 Assembly elections and also served as a minister in the late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa-led government, giving him significant organisational and administrative experience.

His resignation is being viewed as a significant blow to AIADMK’s already fragile post-election position, especially in southern Tamil Nadu, where the party has traditionally maintained a strong presence.

Party insiders acknowledge that the repeated exits have exposed internal dissatisfaction and competing leadership claims within the organisation. The growing perception of factionalism is expected to further challenge the AIADMK’s efforts to consolidate its base ahead of future political contests.

Meanwhile, the ruling TVK continues to gain visibility with the induction of defecting legislators, signalling a possible reshaping of Tamil Nadu’s opposition landscape. Political analysts say the current wave of resignations could mark a crucial turning point in the state’s evolving political dynamics, depending on how the AIADMK leadership responds in the coming weeks.
