Germany Sends New IRIS-T System To Ukraine As Kyiv Braces For Next Russian Mass Attack.

Kyiv; June 2026: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today (Monday – 01st June 2026) that Ukraine has received a new IRIS-T air defense system from Germany yesterday (Sunday – 31st May 2026). “We thank Germany for its constant contribution in protecting the Ukrainian’s; thousands upon thousands of lives have been saved thanks to such strong support. But we also need missiles for air defense systems so that we have sufficient capabilities to repel Russian attacks”.

The IRIS-T is an integral part of Ukraine’s layered air defense system which consists of multiple different systems, most supplied by Western allies. The short-range system can hit a target at a distance of 12 kilometres (08 miles) and at an altitude of up to 08 kilometres (04 miles), while the medium-range system can reach targets at 40 kilometres (24 miles) and at an altitude of 20 kilometres (13 miles).

The IRIS-T launchers, which can carry 08 missiles, are portable and can be transported on tracked platforms or trucks made by its German manufacturer, Diehl Defense. The German-made system is optimized to defend against low-flying subsonic and low radar cross-section targets like cruise missiles, but it is not capable of intercepting a ballistic missile, according to experts.

The delivery comes as Ukraine continues to contend with sustained Russian airstrikes targeting civilian and critical infrastructure, amid a shortage of air defense systems.

Russian forces launched more than 2,300 attack drones, nearly 1,560 guided aerial bombs, and 108 missiles over the past week, according to Zelensky. “All these strikes were directed simply at ordinary civilian infrastructure like residential buildings and energy facilities” Zelensky said. “Every day, we are working to ensure greater protection against Russian terror”.

Zelensky also said Ukraine reached important agreements with Sweden this week on a new aid package that includes strengthening its air force with Saab JAS 39 Gripen C/D fighter jets. His remarks follow Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s announcement on May 28th that Ukraine will receive 16 used Gripen C/D aircraft, while Stockholm will also help Kyiv acquire up to 20 newer Gripen E jets.

Zelensky added that new contributions were received in 2026 under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) program, stressing the need to continue supporting the initiative. “We are counting on both the United States, and European partners. It is anti-ballistic defense that is one of the key priorities for Ukraine”, the president added.

Zelensky’s statement comes amid threats from Moscow about potential new strikes on the Ukrainian capital.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on May 25th that Russia intends to target what it described as Ukrainian “decision-making centres” and advised the United States to evacuate its embassy in Kyiv. Separately, Russia’s Foreign Ministry called on foreign nationals, including diplomats, to leave the capital. Despite these warnings, no foreign embassies in Kyiv reported evacuating staff.

Meanwhile, Zelensky sent a letter to the US President Donald Trump, cautioning about Ukraine’s increasing shortage of air defense systems, especially those designed to intercept ballistic missiles.

While, speaking on May 30th, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the US will “find a way” to help Ukraine defend itself, coming days after Zelensky sent the urgent letter to the White House.

Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL)

In a bid to bolster NATO’S initiative to leverage Ukraine in its resilience against Russia – Japan has joined NATO’s initiative to purchase US made military equipment for Ukraine, contributing around $14.7 million to the program, Tokyo’s Foreign Ministry announced on May 29.

Signed by the US and NATO in July 2025, the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) agreement lays out a mechanism for NATO member states and partners to purchase high-priority equipment for Ukraine.

Japan has contributed approximately $14.7 million to the PURL program, the country’s Foreign Ministry reported. Japan’s contributions to PURL are limited to non-lethal aid. “Japan will continue to support to Ukraine in order to achieve a just and lasting peace and intends to further strengthen Japan-NATO cooperation”, the ministry’s statement read.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine’s foreign minister, expressed gratitude for Japan’s participation in the initiative in a post on social media. “Japan’s principled and consistent support sends a powerful message of solidarity”, he wrote. “We highly value Japan’s contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s resilience and bringing a comprehensive and lasting peace closer”.

Japan’s confirmation of its participation in the PURL program comes after media reports in February that Tokyo planned to commit funds to the initiative. The Japanese public broadcaster NHK, citing unnamed NATO officials, said Japan’s financial contribution would be restricted to non-lethal equipment.

Although Japan’s post-World War II constitution restricts the provision of lethal military aid to foreign countries, Tokyo remains one of Ukraine’s top supporters, with around $15 billion worth of total aid (mostly financial and humanitarian) sent and another $3.5 billion that which has been committed.

US President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte signed the PURL agreement in July 2025, after months of frozen US aid to Ukraine under the new administration. The first shipment of arms for Ukraine purchased under PURL arrived in September 2025.
