D.K. Shivakumar Assumes Office as Karnataka Chief Minister, Vows People-Centric Governance and Inclusive Development
Bengaluru, June 2026 : Newly sworn-in Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Wednesday declared that the office he now occupies belongs to the people of the state and pledged to dedicate his authority and experience to public service. Addressing his first press conference after formally taking charge and chairing his maiden Cabinet meeting at the Vidhana Soudha, Shivakumar described his elevation as both a responsibility and an opportunity to serve Karnataka with renewed commitment.

Emphasising that public office is a trust bestowed by citizens, Shivakumar said the Chief Minister’s position should never be viewed as a personal achievement. “The Chief Minister’s chair does not belong to D.K. Shivakumar. It belongs to the people of Karnataka. The power and authority entrusted to me will be used solely for their welfare and progress,” he stated.
Calling the occasion a new chapter in his political journey, Shivakumar said he accepted the responsibility with humility and determination. He stressed the importance of remaining grounded and remembering one’s roots despite attaining high office. According to him, political leaders must never forget the path they have travelled and the people who contributed to their success.
The Chief Minister said that the Congress party and the people of Karnataka had given him a fresh opportunity to serve the state. He assured citizens that during the remaining tenure of the present government, he would work tirelessly to address public concerns and accelerate development across all sectors.
Referring to months of speculation surrounding a possible leadership transition in Karnataka, Shivakumar said the Congress high command had finally resolved all uncertainty. He recalled repeatedly urging party workers, supporters and the media to remain patient and await an official decision.
“For months there were discussions, predictions and reports regarding leadership change and transfer of power. I had requested everyone to wait. Today, the people of Karnataka and the media have witnessed that moment,” he said, referring to his swearing-in and assumption of office.
Expressing confidence in the trust reposed in him, Shivakumar said public life inevitably involves both criticism and appreciation. However, he maintained that meaningful work is what ultimately endures. “Criticism fades with time, but the work done for people remains. That has always been my belief,” he remarked.
Drawing upon his four decades of political experience, Shivakumar said he intends to bring fresh energy and direction to governance. He noted that his journey in public life began in 1985 and has included both triumphs and difficult challenges. Reflecting on his political career, he recalled facing setbacks, controversies and even imprisonment, but said those experiences only strengthened his resolve.
“I have experienced many phases in public life. There were times of success and times of hardship. I have faced challenges, political battles and even imprisonment. Yet I never lost faith or courage. Hope and determination have guided me throughout my journey,” he said.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Congress leaders, workers and supporters who stood by him over the years. He also acknowledged the role played by the party’s national leadership in facilitating a smooth transition. He thanked the Congress high command for reposing confidence in him and credited the leadership of the party for maintaining unity during the change in government leadership.
Shivakumar specifically appreciated the cooperation extended by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, stating that the transition reflected the party’s collective commitment to discipline and unity. He said Siddaramaiah graciously accepted the decision of the party leadership and facilitated a smooth transfer of responsibilities.
According to Shivakumar, the new administration will function through collective decision-making rather than individual authority. He stressed that governance must be inclusive and responsive to the needs of all sections of society.
The Chief Minister also highlighted the challenges facing both rural and urban Karnataka. He pointed out that nearly 42 per cent of the state’s population resides in urban areas, while many people continue to migrate from villages to cities in search of better employment opportunities, education and improved living standards. Addressing these concerns, he said, would remain a key priority for his government.
Underscoring his approach to governance, Shivakumar said he does not believe in discrimination based on caste or religion. While respecting personal beliefs, he said humanity and public welfare would remain the guiding principles of his administration.
Recalling his early interest in democratic processes, Shivakumar said he first contested an election while studying in the seventh standard. That experience, he noted, shaped his lifelong commitment to democratic values and public service.
Concluding his remarks, the Chief Minister described the newly formed Cabinet as a reflection of Karnataka’s diversity and harmony. He urged the media to continue playing a constructive role by highlighting both achievements and shortcomings of the government. While welcoming criticism, he appealed for responsible reporting and asked the media to avoid unnecessary speculation.
With a promise of transparent governance, inclusive development and collective leadership, Shivakumar formally began his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, pledging to work towards the welfare and progress of every citizen of the state.
