US Reaffirms Support for Kuwait After Airport Attack, Rubio Condemns Assault During High-Level Talks

Washington, June 2026 : The United States on Thursday reaffirmed its commitment to Kuwait’s security and strongly condemned the recent attack on Kuwait International Airport, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al Sabah in Washington.

The meeting, held at the State Department headquarters, came amid heightened regional tensions following a deadly attack on Kuwait International Airport that claimed at least one life and left several others injured. The victim was identified as an Indian national, prompting reactions from both New Delhi and Washington.

According to the US State Department, Rubio used the meeting to reaffirm Washington’s longstanding security partnership with Kuwait and to discuss broader regional challenges, including maritime security and the ongoing tensions involving Iran.

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Rubio reiterated America’s commitment to Kuwait’s security and stability, while also emphasizing US efforts to ensure that Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons. He further stressed the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route for global trade and energy supplies.

The talks highlighted growing concerns across the Gulf region, where security risks have intensified amid months of conflict and geopolitical confrontation involving Iran, Israel and the United States. Washington views Kuwait as a key regional partner and an important ally in maintaining stability in the Gulf.

During the discussions, Rubio strongly condemned what the United States described as attacks linked to Iran against Kuwait. He described the assault on Kuwait International Airport and other locations in the country as “outrageous and unacceptable,” while conveying condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and expressing support for those injured.

The State Department said the United States stands firmly with the people of Kuwait during what it described as a difficult period for the country.

The attack has drawn significant international attention because of its impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure. India, whose citizens form the largest expatriate community in Kuwait, reacted swiftly after confirming that one Indian national had been killed and several others wounded.

In an official statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs condemned the attack and reiterated New Delhi’s consistent position that civilians and civilian facilities should never be targeted during armed conflicts.

India also called on all parties involved in the regional conflict to halt such attacks and pursue measures that would reduce tensions and prevent further loss of life. The Ministry stated that the Indian Embassy in Kuwait was providing all necessary assistance to the injured and remained in close coordination with Kuwaiti authorities to ensure the welfare and safety of Indian nationals.

The incident has generated concern among the nearly one million Indians living and working in Kuwait. The Gulf nation hosts one of the largest overseas Indian communities, comprising professionals, healthcare workers, engineers, technicians and skilled labourers who contribute significantly to Kuwait’s economy.

Meanwhile, the US government issued a travel advisory urging American citizens in Kuwait to remain vigilant. The State Department said it was closely monitoring developments following reports of recent drone and missile attacks targeting the airport and advised travellers to follow guidance issued by local authorities and airport officials.

The attack has also renewed attention on the Strait of Hormuz, through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies pass. Any disruption to shipping in the narrow waterway has the potential to impact global energy markets and major importing nations, including India.

Against this backdrop, the meeting between Rubio and Sheikh Jarrah reflected broader diplomatic efforts by Washington and its Gulf partners to contain regional instability, safeguard critical infrastructure, and prevent further escalation in an already volatile region. As security concerns continue to dominate the regional agenda, protecting civilians, maintaining maritime stability and preserving energy security remain central priorities for governments across West Asia and beyond.
