Assam: Cabinet Expansion Today; 04 New Faces Amongst 12 To Take Oath Today.
Guwahati; June 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will expand his cabinet today (Friday – 05th June 2026) with the induction of 12 ministers, including 04 first-time entrants. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at 12:45 hours today (05th June) at the Jyoti-Bishnu International Auditorium, Sarma announced in a social media post, yesterday (Thursday – 04th June).
The legislators set to take oath as cabinet ministers are Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Biswajit Daimary, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Keshab Mahanta, Krishnendu Paul, Nilima Devi, Pijush Hazarika, Ranoj Pegu and Susanta Borgohain. Their induction will take the total strength of the Assam Cabinet to 17, including the Chief Minister.
At present, the council of ministers comprises Sarma and 04 cabinet ministers, namely BJP leaders Ajanta Neog and Rameswar Teli, along with AGP president Atul Bora and BPF leader Charan Boro, who were sworn in on May 12th. Among the 12 ministers set to take oath, the induction of Ashwini Ray Sarkar, Nilima Devi, Biswajit Daimary and Susanta Borgohain has drawn particular attention as all four will be entering the Cabinet for the first time.
Ashwini Ray Sarkar, 54, represents the Golakganj constituency in Dhubri district. He won the recently concluded Assembly elections by a margin of 30,782 votes. A postgraduate by qualification, Sarkar has no criminal cases registered against him.
Nilima Devi, 61, was elected from Mangaldai with a victory margin of 23,936 votes. She is a graduate and has declared social work as her profession.
Susanta Borgohain, 52, represents the Demow constituency in upper Assam. A graduate by qualification, he defeated Congress candidate Ajoy Kumar Gogoi by 33,528 votes in the Assembly elections.
The list also includes several experienced leaders who served in the previous government in different capacities. Among them is Biswajit Daimary, who was Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly during the last term. Reacting to his inclusion in the Cabinet, Daimary said, “This honour is not merely my personal achievement. It is a reflection of the blessings, trust and unwavering support of every resident of the Tamulpur constituency. For the past one week, sections of the media have been running a smear campaign against me, making it impossible for me to stay anywhere in peace. Despite such difficult times, Chief Minister Sarma reposed deep faith in me. For this, I express my heartfelt gratitude to him”.
Another significant inclusion is Keshab Mahanta of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a key ally of the BJP in Assam. Senior BJP leaders Ashok Singhal, Bimal Borah, Jayant Mallabaruah, Kaushik Rai, Krishnendu Paul, Pijush Hazarika and Ranoj Pegu are also among those set to join the expanded ministry.
