Kerala on High Alert as Monsoon Intensifies; IMD Issues First Red Alert of the Season
Thiruvananthapuram, June 2026 : Heavy rainfall continues to lash Kerala as the southwest monsoon gains strength, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue the first red alert of the season for five northern districts.
Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod have been placed under red alert on Saturday, with forecasts indicating that three of these districts may remain under red alert on Sunday as well due to the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall.
An orange alert has been issued for Idukki, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Palakkad, and Pathanamthitta, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall in these regions. Meanwhile, Alappuzha, Kollam, and Thiruvananthapuram are under a yellow alert, suggesting isolated heavy showers.
The strengthening monsoon has already begun affecting daily life across the state, with several rain-related incidents reported in different regions. Strong winds accompanied by heavy rain lashed Kozhikode city in the morning, uprooting trees in multiple locations and causing temporary disruptions.
Safety Advisory Issued
In view of the worsening weather conditions, authorities have issued a detailed safety advisory for residents across the state. People living in hilly regions prone to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods have been urged to move to safer locations during the daytime if necessary.
Residents in low-lying and flood-prone areas have also been advised to shift to relief camps if water levels rise or if instructed by authorities. The public has been strictly warned against entering rivers, streams, and other water bodies for swimming, fishing, or crossing during periods of heavy rain.
Authorities have further cautioned people to avoid travelling to waterfalls, tourist destinations, hilly terrains, and water bodies until weather conditions improve, citing risks of sudden flooding and soil instability.
The Central Water Commission has also advised people living along riverbanks to remain vigilant due to rising water levels in several rivers across the state.
In addition, caution has been issued against travelling on roads located near water bodies or through areas vulnerable to falling trees and electric line hazards during strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Emergency response systems have been activated, with 24-hour control rooms operational across districts. Citizens in need of assistance have been advised to contact 1077 or 1070 for emergency support.
Monsoon’s Economic Importance
The arrival and progress of the monsoon in Kerala mark the beginning of India’s crucial four-month rainy season, which plays a vital role in agriculture and the broader economy.
Nearly 51 per cent of India’s cultivated land depends on monsoon rainfall, making its intensity and distribution critical for rural livelihoods, food production, price stability, and overall economic growth.
With forecasts indicating continued heavy rainfall, authorities remain on high alert as Kerala braces for further monsoon activity in the coming days.
