Tamil Nadu to Launch ‘Singappenn’ Special Task Force for Women and Child Safety
Chennai, June 2026 : In a major step aimed at strengthening the safety and protection of women and children, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to formally inaugurate the Singappenn Special Task Force on Tuesday. The dedicated police unit, conceived as a specialised law-enforcement wing, will focus exclusively on preventing and responding to crimes against women and children across the state.
The launch ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. at the Jawaharlal Nehru Rajarathinam Sports Stadium in Chennai. The initiative was one of the key promises announced by Chief Minister Vijay shortly after assuming office and is being projected as a flagship measure of his government’s law-and-order agenda.
Officials said the formation of the Singappenn Special Task Force reflects the state government’s determination to create a safer environment for women and children through focused policing, faster response mechanisms, and enhanced coordination among various law-enforcement agencies. The force is expected to function as a dedicated unit capable of handling sensitive cases with greater efficiency and professionalism.
Senior IPS officer K. Bhavaneeswari has been appointed as the first Inspector General (IG) of the task force. Under her leadership, the unit will oversee operations across Tamil Nadu and work closely with district police authorities to ensure effective implementation of its objectives.
The newly constituted force comprises more than 30 personnel, including a Superintendent of Police, two Deputy Superintendents of Police, four Inspectors, and several other officers and support staff. Authorities indicated that the strength of the force may be expanded in the future depending on operational requirements and the scale of its activities across the state.
To establish a distinct identity for the unit, the government has introduced a specially designed uniform for its personnel. Women police officers and Sub-Inspectors attached to the force will wear blue shirts paired with khaki trousers, along with black caps and black shoes. The unique attire is intended to make members of the task force easily recognizable while on duty and help build public awareness about the specialised unit.
The Singappenn Special Task Force was originally scheduled to be launched on May 29. However, the inauguration was postponed at the last moment due to administrative reasons. With the revised launch date now confirmed, officials said the force will begin operations immediately after the formal ceremony.
Following the inauguration, personnel of the task force will be deployed across Tamil Nadu, with units expected to function in all districts. The statewide deployment is aimed at ensuring that women and children in both urban and rural areas have access to a dedicated support system within the police framework.
According to officials, the force will play a crucial role in addressing crimes such as harassment, abuse, trafficking, exploitation, and violence against women and minors. In addition to responding to complaints and emergencies, the unit will focus on preventive policing measures, surveillance, victim support services, and public awareness campaigns.
Authorities also expect the task force to work closely with schools, educational institutions, social welfare departments, and community organisations to promote safety awareness and encourage the reporting of crimes. Special emphasis will be placed on creating a victim-friendly approach that ensures timely assistance and support for those affected.
The launch of the Singappenn Special Task Force is being viewed as one of the most significant policing reforms introduced by the Vijay administration. By creating a specialised force dedicated exclusively to the welfare and protection of women and children, the government aims to enhance public trust in law enforcement, improve response capabilities, and strengthen the overall safety framework across Tamil Nadu.
Officials believe the initiative will serve as a model for focused policing and contribute significantly to creating a safer and more secure environment for vulnerable sections of society throughout the state.
