Maharashtra to Lead in Electric Vehicle Manufacturing: Chief Minister Eknath Shinde
Mumbai : Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has approved four major high-tech projects in Marathwada, Vidarbha, Pune, and Panvel, with a total investment of ₹1,17,220 crore. During a meeting of the Cabinet Sub-Committee of the Industries Department, chaired by the Chief Minister, it was announced that these projects will create approximately 29,000 jobs. Chief Minister Shinde highlighted that these projects will drive significant investment in semiconductor and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, generating both direct and indirect employment across the state. He also stated that Maharashtra will soon be recognized as a leading state in EV manufacturing.
Earlier, in July, the sub-committee had approved investment projects worth ₹80,000 crore, bringing the total investment approved over the past two months to ₹2 lakh crore. These initiatives are expected to create 35,000 jobs.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the meeting, along with Industries Minister Uday Samant, who participated via video conference. Key officials present included Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. I.S. Chahal, Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Kharge, Finance Additional Chief Secretary O.P. Gupta, and Principal Secretary of the Industries Department Harshdeep Kamble.
These projects are expected to foster technological innovation, research, and development while strengthening the local supply chain. Micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) will benefit significantly.
One of the projects involves a semiconductor manufacturing partnership between Tower Semiconductor and Adani Group in Panvel, Raigad District. This project will see an investment of ₹58,763 crore in the first phase and ₹25,184 crore in the second phase, totaling ₹83,947 crore. It is expected to create 15,000 jobs.
Additionally, a mega semiconductor project by RRP Electronics was approved at the cabinet sub-committee meeting on July 30, 2024. This will be Maharashtra’s first semiconductor manufacturing project, involving OSAT and chip production. Both RRP Electronics and Tower Semiconductor will play a key role in making Maharashtra a leader in semiconductor production, helping to meet the growing demand and establish a robust semiconductor ecosystem in India.
Skoda Auto Volkswagen India will also establish a large-scale project in Pune with an investment of ₹12,000 crore. This project will create 1,000 jobs and produce electric vehicles (EVs) based on the latest technology.
Under the state’s electric vehicle promotion policy, Toyota Kirloskar Motor will launch a massive EV manufacturing project in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. With an investment of ₹21,273 crore and the creation of 12,000 jobs, this project will solidify Maharashtra’s position as a leader in the EV manufacturing sector.
These projects will not only promote technological advancement and build a strong local supply chain but will also benefit MSMEs in Marathwada. The increased use of electric vehicles is expected to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts.
Previously, JSW Green Mobility’s EV manufacturing project was approved in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s second mega project in the same region, focused on electric vehicle production, will further boost the sector’s growth.
In addition, under the textile industry policy, Raymond Luxury Cottons will undertake a large-scale project for spinning, yarn dyeing, and weaving at the Additional Industrial Development Corporation in Nandgaon Peth, Amravati District. This project will see an investment of ₹188 crore and create 550 jobs.
