Two Doctors Close to Former RG Kar Principal Sandeep Ghosh Suspended
Kolkata : The West Bengal Government’s Health Department has suspended two doctors believed to be close associates of Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, who is currently under the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for alleged financial irregularities.
The suspended doctors are Avik Dey, Resident Medical Officer (RMO) of the Radiodiagnosis Department at Burdwan Medical College, and Birupaksh Biswas, a senior resident doctor in the Pathology Department at Uasi Hospital, who was transferred just a day earlier. A departmental inquiry has also been launched against Dey, according to his suspension order.
Biswas was transferred from Burdwan Medical College in Burdwan district to Kakdwip Sub-Divisional Hospital in South 24 Parganas on Wednesday. This suspension follows an alleged culture of intimidation introduced by Dey and Biswas, as claimed by junior doctors after the tragic rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College last month. Junior doctors accused the two of threatening them and forcing them to follow their directives.
On Tuesday, a day after Ghosh was taken into CBI custody, the Health Department issued a notification suspending him from state medical services while the investigation continues. Ghosh has since moved the Supreme Court, challenging the CBI probe into his alleged involvement in financial mismanagement.
Ghosh has faced multiple accusations of financial irregularities during his tenure as principal of RG Kar Medical College. These include awarding contracts to private and outsourced entities without obtaining the necessary approvals from the Health Department and the College Council. Other allegations involve outsourcing hospital infrastructure projects to private organizations instead of adhering to Public Works Department (PWD) procedures, and the sale of biomedical waste, including organs of unidentified deceased individuals brought to the mortuary for post-mortem.
