Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Expresses Joy Over the Establishment of the First Marathi University in Riddhapur
Nagpur : Lord Sarvagya Shri Chakradhar Swami, who was born in Gujarat and worked in Maharashtra, spread the teachings of the Mahanubhava sect across India and Afghanistan. He promoted the Marathi language, believing that discussions on religion should reach the common people in a language they could understand. In this way, Lord Sarvagya Shri Chakradhar Swami truly served Marathi. When I was the Chief Minister, I had the opportunity to make a decision regarding the establishment of the Marathi University at Riddhapur. However, the period following the change in government was unfavorable for this initiative. Now that we are back in power, I made this decision in the cabinet and promptly appointed a vice-chancellor, said Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
Fadnavis made these remarks while addressing a gathering at Suresh Bhat Auditorium on the occasion of Bhagwan Sarvagya Shri Chakradhar Swami Avaratha Day. Several dignitaries, including Vidwans Baba, Most Reverend Karanjekar Baba, Kapustalnikar Baba, Bidkar Baba, M.Dho.Vyas Baba, MLA Parinay Phuke, Kripal Tumane, and other saints and monks, were present at the event.
At the beginning of his speech, the Deputy Chief Minister expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to seek blessings from the distinguished guests. He noted that Shri Chakradhar Swami defined Maharashtra simply as the region where Marathi is spoken. Riddhapur holds special significance for the Marathi language, as it is believed to be the birthplace of the first book written in Marathi, authored by the Mahanubhava sect. While advocating for Marathi to be granted the status of a classical language, Fadnavis emphasized the importance of preserving these Marathi texts.
Fadnavis also explained that when he was the Chief Minister, a development plan of Rs 230 crore was prepared for Riddhapur. He further elaborated that this progress was achieved due to his persistent efforts and that, upon returning to power, his government formed a committee and sought the blessings of Lord Chakradhar Swami to continue the work. Acting as Finance Minister, he ensured that financial provisions were made in advance, based on the committee’s report.
He expressed happiness over the establishment of the first Marathi university in Riddhapur and the appointment of a scholar from the Mahanubhava sect as its vice-chancellor. As promised in the budget, an additional Rs 25 crores has been allocated for the second phase of development. Furthermore, funds have been provided for Sri Kshetra Panchaleshwar and other sacred places, totaling Rs 78 crores. He also mentioned that a proposal for development work at Katol has been approved, with plans to provide Rs 25 crores in phases.
Fadnavis praised the Mahanubhava sect for maintaining its religious traditions through numerous foreign invasions. The sect has fostered a sense of unity, emphasizing that all of society is one, regardless of caste. There is no discrimination within the sect, and this unity is crucial for the nation. Additionally, he commended the sect for its significant role in promoting a society free from addiction.
The Deputy Chief Minister also shared his long-standing relationship with the Mahanubhava sect, spanning 28 years. He recalled his time as mayor, when he had the opportunity to serve at a meeting in Chich Bhavan, and pledged to give priority to the request for a building for the Mahanubhava sect in that area.
During the event, several dignitaries participated in the release of the Mahanubhava Granth. MLA Parinay Phuke, MLA Kripal Tumane, and other Mahants delivered speeches. Dr. Avinash Avalgaonkar, Chancellor of the Marathi University at Riddhapur, along with other Mahants, were honored during the occasion.
