TVK Moves to Formalise Alliance Ahead of Polls, Vijay to Chair Meeting of Friendly Parties

Chennai, June 2026 : The ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has begun the process of formalising its political alliance by bringing together its friendly parties under a common state-level platform ahead of upcoming electoral challenges, including local body elections and possible Assembly bypolls.

Chief Minister and TVK president C. Joseph Vijay will chair a meeting of leaders from the party’s friendly organisations in Chennai on July 1, marking the government’s first major initiative to institutionalise the coalition that has backed the TVK since it assumed office.

Although the proposed alliance is yet to receive an official name, senior party leaders said it would function as a structured political front based on shared ideological values rather than merely serving as an electoral arrangement.

According to party sources, secularism will be one of the central guiding principles of the new coalition, which aims to strengthen coordination among its constituent parties while presenting a united political platform on issues of common concern.

As part of preparations for the meeting, TVK General Secretary and Minister N. Anand, along with General Secretary (Election Management) and Minister Aadhav Arjuna, have been reaching out personally to leaders of allied parties to invite them to the inaugural consultation.

On Sunday, the two leaders met Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president Thol. Thirumavalavan, while on Monday they called on Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) state president K.M. Kadhar Mohideen and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko to discuss the proposed front and extend formal invitations.

Senior TVK functionaries said the primary objective of the July 1 meeting is to establish a structured coordination mechanism among parties that have supported the TVK-led government since its formation but have so far functioned without a formal alliance framework.

The proposed front is expected to go beyond electoral coordination by facilitating joint political campaigns, coordinated policy positions, and collective responses to important social and political issues affecting the state.

A senior TVK leader said that although the supporting parties had consistently backed the government, they had largely continued to function independently and had not jointly organised statewide agitations, campaigns or political movements.

“The creation of a formal alliance will enable better coordination among all partners and allow them to speak with one voice on key public issues. It will also strengthen organisational cooperation in the run-up to future elections,” the leader said.

The initiative is also expected to help streamline seat-sharing discussions and campaign planning ahead of local body elections and any Assembly by-elections that may arise, while laying the foundation for a broader electoral strategy in the years ahead.

A senior VCK leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the party had effectively been working alongside the TVK since the formation of the government, even in the absence of a formally announced alliance.

“Our leader has consistently maintained that the VCK can participate in governance while remaining outside a formal alliance. However, in practical terms, the alliance has already existed. What remains now is to officially recognise and institutionalise it,” the leader said.

Political observers believe the move reflects the TVK leadership’s effort to consolidate its support base, strengthen coordination among like-minded parties, and build a stable coalition capable of presenting a united front in future electoral battles across Tamil Nadu.
