Egypt Files FIFA Complaint Over Refereeing After Controversial 3-2 World Cup Defeat to Argentina

Cairo, July 2026 : The Egyptian Football Federation (EFF) has formally lodged a protest with FIFA over the officiating in Egypt’s dramatic 3-2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16, alleging that a series of controversial refereeing decisions significantly influenced the outcome of the match.

Egypt came within touching distance of one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history after taking a commanding 2-0 lead against Argentina in Atlanta on Tuesday. According to a report published by Spanish daily Diario AS, Egyptian Football Association President Hany Abo Rida has submitted a formal complaint to FIFA seeking an investigation into what the federation describes as major officiating errors during the knockout encounter.

The complaint reportedly argues that crucial decisions repeatedly went against Egypt, ultimately affecting the result of the match. Among Egypt’s principal grievances is the decision to disallow a goal following a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review. The Pharaohs believed the goal should have stood and maintained that the decision deprived them of a potentially decisive advantage against the defending champions.

The Egyptian camp is also unhappy with the handling of a late penalty appeal during the build-up to Argentina’s winning goal. Officials and players argue that a challenge involving Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister warranted a VAR review but was ignored by the match officials, allowing play to continue before Fernandez scored the decisive goal in stoppage time.

Following the match, Egypt head coach Hassan did not hide his frustration, suggesting that factors beyond the football itself may have influenced the outcome.

“We looked better than the reigning champions—better in everything—but the result was influenced by internal factors on the pitch and external factors off it,” Hassan told reporters after the game.

He went further by implying that tournament organisers may have wanted Lionel Messi and Argentina to remain in the competition.

“Perhaps they wanted to keep the world champions in the competition. Perhaps they wanted Messi to stay in the running,” he said.

The Egyptian coach added that football occasionally involves influences beyond tactical and technical aspects.

“In football, there are sometimes external factors that go beyond the technical side of the game. The world champions received support at every level,” Hassan claimed.

The coach was particularly critical of referee Francois Letexier’s handling of two incidents that he believes fundamentally changed the course of the match—the disallowed Egyptian goal and the unreviewed penalty appeal before Argentina’s dramatic winner.

“We haven’t seen respect or fair play,” Hassan said. “A penalty was ruled out. It was not even checked by VAR, and our second goal was remarkably, for whatever reason, disallowed. We have been treated unfairly, and it has been an injustice.”

While FIFA has not yet publicly responded to the complaint, the controversy has added another chapter to one of the most dramatic matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Argentina advanced to the quarterfinals after producing one of the tournament’s greatest comebacks, but Egypt’s formal protest ensures that the debate over the officiating is likely to continue long after the final whistle.
