Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire ‘Over’ After Fresh US Strikes, Calls Tehran ‘Liars’ and ‘A Threat to Global Security’

Ankara, July 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that the ceasefire with Iran was effectively “over,” delivering his strongest remarks yet against Tehran following a fresh wave of American military strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure. Speaking on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Ankara, Trump accused Iran of repeatedly violating agreements, abandoning negotiations and posing a continuing threat to regional and global security.

Addressing reporters, Trump said he had lost faith in further diplomatic engagement with Iran, describing the country’s leadership in highly critical terms and questioning the value of continuing peace talks.

“To me, I think it’s over. I don’t want to deal with them anymore,” Trump said. “They’re scum. They are sick people. They’re led by sick people. They are vicious, violent people and if they had a nuclear weapon, they would use it.”

The US President said that while his administration’s negotiators remained willing to engage with Tehran, he personally believed further discussions would achieve little.

“I’ll speak to our negotiators. They want to negotiate. They’re good people—Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner—but they have to come back to me. As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars,” Trump stated.

He accused Iran of repeatedly reneging on commitments made during negotiations.

“We make a deal. Everyone agrees—no nuclear weapon. Then they go outside, talk to the press and say we never even discussed it. There’s something wrong with them. They’re cuckoo. As far as I’m concerned, it’s over,” he said.

Trump also levelled serious allegations against the Iranian government over its handling of domestic protests, claiming authorities had killed tens of thousands of demonstrators. He alleged that international media had failed to adequately report the scale of the violence.

“They’re liars, they’re cheats, they’re sick people. They’ve hurt their own people. They’ve killed 54,000 people who were protesting,” Trump claimed.

“When people ask why the government hasn’t been overthrown, it’s because those protesters are dead. They had no guns while the other side had machine guns. The press doesn’t report it. They’re bad people, and frankly, I don’t want to waste my time with them.”

Despite his comments, Trump said he would allow members of his administration to continue diplomatic contacts if they believed progress was possible, though he made clear he no longer supported negotiations personally.

The President’s remarks came just hours after the United States launched a new round of military strikes against Iran in response to what Washington described as fresh attacks on commercial shipping passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), American forces struck more than 80 Iranian military targets using precision-guided munitions in what it described as an immediate response to Tehran’s actions against international maritime traffic.

In a statement posted on X, CENTCOM said the operation targeted Iranian air defence systems, command and control networks, coastal radar installations, anti-ship missile capabilities and more than 60 boats operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The US military said the objective was to significantly reduce Iran’s ability to threaten international shipping and freedom of navigation through one of the world’s busiest maritime trade routes.

Washington alleged that Iranian forces had recently attacked three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, including the Marshall Islands-flagged M/T Al Rekayyat, the Saudi Arabia-flagged M/T Wedyan, and the Liberian-flagged M/T Cyprus Prosperity.

CENTCOM described the alleged attacks as an “unwarranted act of aggression” and accused Iran of violating the existing ceasefire arrangement.

“The unwarranted aggression by Iranian forces is a clear and dangerous violation of the ceasefire and undermines freedom of navigation,” the US military said.

It added that American forces remained prepared to respond decisively if Iran continued actions that threatened international commerce or violated agreed understandings.

Military officials said the latest strikes focused on degrading a wide range of Iranian military capabilities, including missile systems capable of targeting commercial vessels, coastal surveillance infrastructure, command centres and naval assets positioned around the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints, with a significant share of global oil exports and international trade passing through the narrow waterway each day. Any disruption to shipping in the region has immediate implications for global energy markets and international commerce.

The latest escalation marks a significant deterioration in already strained US-Iran relations. Trump’s declaration that the ceasefire is “over” signals a major shift in Washington’s approach and raises fresh uncertainty over the prospects for diplomacy, even as US negotiators remain formally engaged with their Iranian counterparts.
