Deschamps Shrugs Off Referee Debate Ahead of France-Morocco World Cup Quarterfinal

Foxborough, July 2026 : France head coach Didier Deschamps has brushed aside concerns over FIFA’s decision to appoint an all-Argentine officiating team for his side’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarterfinal against Morocco, insisting that France’s focus remains solely on its opponents and not the match officials.

The referee appointments have generated widespread discussion after FIFA named an entirely Argentine crew to oversee the high-stakes knockout clash. It marks the first time during the 2026 World Cup that all on-field officials for a match are from the same country, prompting debate given the recent sporting rivalry between France and Argentina, particularly following the dramatic 2022 FIFA World Cup final.

Despite the controversy, Deschamps made it clear that his players would not allow the appointments to distract them from their preparations.

“We have to deal with it. I trust the referees. Our opponent is Morocco, not the referee,” the French manager said during his pre-match press conference. He also expressed hope that the officiating standards would remain consistently high, referring positively to previous performances by World Cup referees.

FIFA has appointed 44-year-old Argentine referee Facundo Tello to take charge of the encounter, assisted by fellow Argentines Juan Pablo Belatti, Gabriel Chade and Dario Herrera.

Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi also dismissed suggestions that the appointments could influence the outcome of the contest. He praised Tello’s experience and stressed that his team had complete confidence in FIFA’s selection process.

“We’re talking about a very experienced referee, and that’s exactly what we want for matches of this importance,” Ouahbi said. “We’re very calm about it.”

The Moroccan coach pointed out that his team had previously been officiated by a Dutch referee in a match against the Netherlands without any issues, adding that referees always strive to perform professionally and fairly.

He acknowledged that Tello is generally known for allowing the game to flow and issuing fewer bookings than many other referees, but maintained that this was simply part of the game’s dynamics rather than a cause for concern.

France enter the quarterfinal with an impressive record, having reached the last eight of the World Cup for the fourth consecutive edition after advancing to the quarterfinals in 2014, 2018, 2022 and now 2026. The two-time world champions are also aiming to reach a third successive semifinal, a feat achieved previously only by Germany and Brazil.

Standing in their way is a determined Moroccan side seeking to recreate its historic run from the 2022 World Cup, when it became the first African nation to reach the semifinals. That memorable campaign ended with a 2-0 defeat to France, making Thursday’s clash a highly anticipated rematch between the two nations.

With a place in the semifinals at stake, both teams have chosen to keep the spotlight on football rather than officiating, as they prepare for one of the tournament’s biggest knockout encounters.
